I wrote a response to a pro-AI article I saw from the indieweb news feed and why I disagreed with itās arguments.
The weekly updates continue!
This week most of my free time was spent trying to get my head around godot shaders, I made decent progress but still donāt truly understand them ![]()
what a great response, i especially liked your take on craft vs. productivity because i also find more joy in the process of the craft than the end result and i only like the end result when i know that i was the one to make it happen. anyway since so many tech bros keep insisting ai is so inevitable when skynet comes i hope the robots kill me first.
I have published a new weekly recap post:
Iām about to write about Linux myself, been using Kubuntu for a few months now! I was also shocked by how smooth my mini pc was after the switch! I was truly impressed how everything is working fine and Iām not forced to have bloatware.
The only thing I truly miss is my overlay productivity companion āgamesā such as Mini Cozy Room and Bongo Cat. :(
A year later, I compare my set up and default software since starting the journey of decreasing Big Tech in my life:
An excellent response. I also find it incredibly puzzling that the author is supposedly all for owning oneās content while simultaneously championing a product that is trained on rampant theft of content.
Speaking of ⦠I posted a follow-up to yesterdayās data theft-related fretting. As much as it pains me and angers me to do it, Iāve stripped down my RSS feed considerably. No more full-text articles free for the scraping. A determined thief will always find a way into your house, but if you frustrate them by slowing them down enough, they might decide itās not worth the effort and pass you over. Thatās what Iām hoping for here, in any case⦠Iāll be very curious to see if I get fewer hits on my RSS feed going forward.
I know I wonāt be able to eliminate the threat of scraping completely, but the combination of a less-attractive RSS feed and the various bot-limiting protections I have in place should help a bit.
Interesting and inspiring to see the progress youāve made! I keep meaning to try installing Linux on the cheap laptop my husband and I bought a couple years back as a āburnerā laptop for travel. We never use it, so it would be a good platform for experimentation⦠Perhaps Iāll give it a try. What made you choose Kubuntu?
Weekend escapades without the kids, yay
Not embarrassing at all. I love all my squooshy plush manatees.![]()
good to know those cloud services donāt work with Linux! Iām trying to make the switch myself and I didnāt even consider that.
The Weekly Wrap Up is posted! Links this week are about prisoners and kittens, a typeface for handknitting and an archive of games that either were lost or never were. I did some more postcarding, went to an Indivisible meeting and volunteered as an immigration court observer. Plus, as usual, I listened to, read and watched things.
I wrote a longish blog post about issues I had trying to make a water shader in Godotā¦
Itās mostly technical stuff but thereās at least a few pretty pictures!
Just reading about this made me feel tired ![]()
Iām gonna start using this term a lot.
The quilt is coming along nicely!
Glad you were able to get out and about in the snow for a bit. One fun thing to try this winter (or next) is snowshoeing. You can pick up new snowshoes for fairly cheap (CAD $60-$120, so about USD $45-$88), and people who get them for Christmas often end up selling them mostly unused second hand around this time of the year. ![]()
Thank you for the write up of being a court observer (and for doing the work).
Thanks for the hard work on democracy! I want it to warm up so I can print some postcards on the letterpress for postcard writers, esp in NC and GA.
@muffle I love your blog and the comment interface! I left a longer comment on your multiple personalities post. re: comfort item, I seem to abhor comfort (see the post I just linked lol) but if Iām being honest, itās got to be the cell phone, right? Or maybe this fancy portfolio thing I have for keeping papers flat but that never seems to have a particular use and I just drag it around everywhere haha
