Crypto has legitimate uses, some of which may or may not be illegal depending on the country in question. Most of the hype around it is bullshit, but there are good reasons to use it in some circumstances.

Such as? I’ve never seen a legitimate use for cryptocurrency.

  • I can’t buy groceries with it.
  • I can’t pay bills with it.
  • I can’t pay my mortgage with it.
  • I can’t pay local, state, and federal taxes with it.

It isn’t even currency; it’s a volatile, speculative asset. You buy it, hold it, and hope its value doesn’t crater – and that people don’t decide to kidnap you and beat the password to your wallet out of you with a wrench.

a lot of domain companies take crypto and i mean legitimate companies. at spaceship (namecheap subsidiary) i could pay for domains with crypto directly. i also remember paying with crypto for my first domain ever and a VPS on gandi.net back when i was a minor in highschool ~10 years ago.

but yeah irl? crypto is totally useless.
unless you live in venezuela, if im not mistaken they have goverment-issued crypto

It’s kinda cool that some domain registrars take crypto, but like you said, it’s still useless IRL. And if I’ve got to use government-issued fiat currency (as opposed to privately-issued fiat currency, which is what crypto really is) for just about everything anyway, then I might as well use it to rent my domains.

I’d rather use money backed by the ā€œfull faith and credit of the United Statesā€ than money backed by the empty promises of techbros in hoodies – even if US dollars really are just fancy toilet paper in reality, they’re still accepted everywhere in the US, and I don’t get shafted too hard by exchange rates when I need to pay in CA/AU dollars, Euros, or pounds sterling instead.

yeah fr! when i got into making websites and stuff i didn’t have paypal (afaik wasnt even available in my country back then) and i didn’t have a debit card, but you could easily buy crypto (and still can) from an exchange via bank transfer (here you don’t need a bank account to do a bank transfer!)

if people would indeed donate in crypto id either use it to extend the domain or convert it to fiat for small irl expenses. i actually dont have a trust in crypto either

i know some people buy medicine with crypto, hence the may or may not be illegal.

  • Buying Meds
  • Buying recreational drugs (I think this is totally legitimate whether it’s legal or not)
  • Transferring money electronically without going through a bank (there are a number of journalists, businesses and charities that accept crypto because they’re either proscribed in certain countries or the major payment platforms don’t like them)

Is Crypto used for harmful stuff and dumb grifting most of the time? Yeah, but it can be used for legitimately useful things as well.

Used properly crypto is the closest thing to paper money you’re getting over the internet, hell I can buy it with cash. I use government money for pretty much everything, but you know, sometimes I don’t want my debit card details attached to things, like donations to causes the current government might decide to retroactively criminalize and is already taking steps to suppress.

And that’s my issue. It’s not used properly. It won’t get used properly. Because why would I use it as a currency if there’s a chance that my 1$ today might be worth 2$ tomorrow?

It’s a conceptually interesting idea that has crashed against the reality of the world we live in.

or it could be worth 10000x more. i still remember that story of a guy that essentially paid a few million for a pizza. when he bought it, crypto was worthless, and bam a few years later, it’s now worth life-changing amount of money.

the problem with crypto is that you’re basically using stocks to pay for stuff online. crypto behaves more like stock market than a currency

Absolutely correct. Which is why it’s a stupid currency. Money is meant to be used to facilitate transactions but if my money can appreciate 1000x what’s my incentive to spend it?

As I said, it’s a conceptually interesting idea but the reality of the world we live it makes it completely useless for the most part.

It’s made a lot of people rich and contributed to a lot of ecological damage in the process. Such a classic engine of opportunity/abuse. The trick with cryptocurrency is convincing people that something intangible holds value; not a huge problem, we do this all the time. Then when you’ve managed to manufacture enough hypothetical value, you dip out before everybody else. Like an even more abstract stock market for people who can be convinced of their brilliance with the same sort of chants you see in Twitch chats.

That crypto has been used in a positive way isn’t inconceivable at all, but if there’s a mountain made of garbage, a bit of moss growing at the top of it isn’t going to change my opinion much on the mountain.

Hey y’all – just want to say that while this discussion has been civil (except maybe my snotty comment), I didn’t really mean to open up this can of worms (if in fact I did). Y’all have some interesting viewpoints, and I appreciate all of you. Love this community.

Most people do not run marathons to get from A to B. Other ways of transportation like horses and later trains and cars solved that problem long ago.

But some people advocate for replacing all kinds of stuff with AI, even if it’s stuff we love to do as humans.

An interesting debate, to say the least.
