Tonight’s post - yeah - I’m just sitting here on the sofa, lights dim, listening to this staggeringly wonderful album pour soundwaves all over me, and I’m feeling all the feels.

In the last few months I have discovered two new bands I think are just fantastic – they were the opening acts for St. Vincent and for Ride when I went to see them in Dallas. It was cool to discover a couple of new bands, and it made me feel like I am, in fact, still open to new music.

Who were they? That’s my favorite kind of discovery - opening acts.

And re: your last post - I had an OK Computer poster in my high schools and college dorms. All the big big feels.

I haven’t looked into product sourcing as thoroughly as you, but I’ve had similar experiences with Tractor Supply. Whenever I go, I leave empty handed and feeling mildly defeated. Then you mentioned Menards and I immediately missed living in the Midwest.

And I know @CaffeineAndLasers has already pulled this line out, but …

you can’t vote with your wallet when there’s no one on the ballot

I keep saying this over and over in my head. I love the way it reads.

So one was Glass Beams. I bought their EP on vinyl at the St. Vincent show. Really good, but live they were absolutely amazing.

The other was this little band Rocket, opened for Ride, very reminicent of Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, etc. Made me so happy to hear young musician killing it with bass, 2 guitars, and drums. Really great.

I like this idea!

The person looking for phone numbers for his preteen to call reminded me of They Might Be Giants’ dial-a-song, which I learned is back up! You call and a recording of a song plays.

I remember calling when I was a kid. Back then it was an answering machine. I just tried it again and spent a few minutes listening to today’s song. Brought me back.

I don’t have a metafilter account, so unfortunately I can’t suggest it to the poster. It’s 844-387-6962 if anyone here wants to give it a try.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Let mw know what you think when you’ve read it! It’s really interesting and I’m so glad Open Access books exist, they’re great if you like random niche subjects.

There are a lot, really a lot of opportunities. But you need to open up to see them.

I think this is where the difference between the independent web and social media really shines.

In social media, you are forced to share space with assholes so you had to fight them to avoid letting your community become the Nazis bar

But if you are operating separate sovereign websites, it is safe-er to ignore the assholes.

Not to say you shouldn’t fight for your principles, but you can advocate on your own terms in your site rather than on theirs by directly engaging (or on Zuck/Musk’s terms)

pretty much this. this is exactly why they should have their own websites — i won’t see their takes
