My website turned 3 years old yesterday so I posted a small thing to my blog about how my relationship with it has evolved.
I might build on this in a later post or maybe plant it in my garden.

The Weekly Wrap Up has been posted! There is quite the potpourri of links this week: Manicules, medieval portable altars, Geocities before it was Geocities, a shadow library, literature to be viewed specifically on the web and the urge to taste spicy rodent-repelling tape. Plus toilet drama, meeting old neighbors and playing boardgames. It was a busy week!
I got some time away one evening last week and attended a writing workshop, it was a lot of fun that I can apply to my website
Two posts, responding to a tech/culture nostalgia post with my own memories and a general weekly log.
Some thoughts on re-asserting ownership in age where everything is rented:

There is a lot of romanticising about what Geocities never was these days, isnāt there?
Iāve picked up golf again after a decade or two away from it. Having fun relearning how to play.
Thanks for the feedback. I made a minor edit to the closing sentence to clarify that I was āromanticizingā about what āYahoo! GeoCitiesā was. The original GeoCities, before Yahoo! bought it, was pretty cool imo and not what I was comparing Neocities to. I regret I was unclear about that.
I had left playing around in Geocities long before the Yahoo! Takeover!

i loved geocities. i thought it was state of the art when i was building sites on it! your post made me go down a restorativland rabbit hole.
(since this time thereās no popover ads.)

I found a list ranking all 201 episodes of The X-Files (not including S11), so I decided to re-watch the series in ranking order. I blogged a few non-spoilery thoughts about the listmakerās top three episodes:
(The top three were āJose Chungās From Outer Space,ā āClyde Bruckmanās Final Repose,ā and āBeyond the Sea,ā for the curious.)
Okay so I got really invested in the conversation surrounding Generative AI use in creative fields and have written a blog post concerning my opinions about it. I took way too long creating this, even trying to have some sort of decent structure, because I wanted to highlight my points to be clear yet detailed as possible. I also wanted to state what specific kind of AI I am talking about, just so people are aware that not every AI is created equal or have the same purposes. Iām coming at this with a perspective of an artist, so I will naturally have a bias towards that subject.
Long story short. I donāt support the use of Generative AI in creative fields, not now, not ever. Especially in itās current state. That is my definitive stance.
Thank you for sharing this incredible & personal story. What scares me most this story (and other like it) is the transition from ābest friendā to manipulation and pressure. Do you think this endgame was her plan all along, or did her attitude toward you change because the circumstances did? Itās very difficult to trust people, knowing that they are prone to such dramatic reversals.
Lots of overlap between your views and mine. The use case for generative AI has always struck me as weirdly narrow. Itās like, hereās a super fun tool! But donāt use it if you actually care about accuracy or quality, thatās not what itās designed for. Also, donāt use it if you are worried about legal issues/copyright. Also, donāt use it if you need a human who can take responsibility for whether the output is correct or good.
I bashed this out today. Been going through a rough patch and I canāt afford therapy, so I trauma dump into my website instead.
