The Weekly Wrap Up is posted! Links this week include defeating AI art theft, the places still using legacy Windows systems and never letting your dreams die even if it takes a while to make them come true. I share a partial list of places I no longer do business with and discuss a few new candidates. And my weekend visitor, Ceelo the cat, is back! Plus, as usual, I listened to, read and watched things.

Botsplaining has become a major pet peeve of mine, and it’s one of the main reasons why I barely use traditional social media platforms anymore. These forums are a welcome refuge!

I was on a real GB homebrew kick earlier this year so this is cool!

Yeah, if somebody was presumptuous enough to not only feed something I’ve written into ChatGPT, but tell me they did so and not even bother expressing the ideas the bot fed them in their own words, I would not be happy with them. Probably not kind, either.

Look: I only speak two languages with any real fluency: English and bad English. But I don’t try to fake it by using AI or even machine translation. Even when I do attempt French, I damn well admit that I don’t speak it particularly well.

I’ve thought so much about this. I remember the first time I encountered it, I wrote a long-form blog post, probably close to 3500-4000 words, and some Reddit user through it into ChatGPT and asked it to respond. The response, luckily, was not contrarian, but when I realized it was not written by a person at all, I was really quite upset about it.

At that point, I still had a WordPress with Google Analytics, All in One SEO, etc., so I hadn’t thought about it too much from a privacy standpoint, but you’re absolutely right here. I’d be really angry if someone fed all of my writing into an LLM when I’ve specifically built my site in a way to avoid all of the corporate nonsense.

Nicely written!

That’s a nice post! As someone who has English as a second language, I get the impulse to run whatever you are writing to something like Chatgpt. Being self-conscious about simple language mistakes and the fear of being dismissed as a result is real, and natural. But I wholeheartedly agree with your point on that!

Not to mention, in the age of LLMs, it’s the sort of thing that lets you be instantly recognised as human. Which is becoming more and more valuable. That’s something!

Another somewhat rambling slice of life from me, lol. Possible content warning for a bit of religion talk.

Wow, I haven’t run into that just yet but wow. That is soooo obnoxious! Just use your brain and your fingers and type what you want to say, for heaven’s sake. :sob:

It’s terrible of me, but whenever somebody talks to me about the Rapture, my first impulse is to say, ā€œIt already happened, pal, and you got left behind with me.ā€

I haven’t done so yet, but the temptation remains.

i really appreciated the quick recap on rapture-tok because it was in my youtube feed quite a bit. i have not been interested in watching any of them yet but was still kind of wondering what was going on

Keeping my temper in check when it has happened to me has been quite difficult! It’s such a violation, and an affront to conversation itself.

Thank you for the kind words, and I feel exactly the same way! It’s actually making me question having a full-text RSS feed… I love full-text RSS that makes it easy for me to read new posts in my reader, but I do worry about all the unnecessary generative AI integration that’s going on in the RSS devspace. I also worry that AI companies themselves may start using full-text RSS feeds to circumvent the things we do to block AI scrapers from our sites…

Thank you! I totally understand the impulse as well, but one thing I’ve always found when chatting online with people who speak English as a second language is that their English is often better than that of many native English speakers! I can’t even begin to list the number of times I’ve seen someone self-consciously apologize for their ā€œpoor English,ā€ when their post or comment was perfectly comprehensible with minimal or even no errors.

At least the IndieWeb seems to be safe from this practice… for now. :face_with_peeking_eye:

Thanks for all your comments, folks!

the whole rapture-tok shebang is what led me to not use youtube for the month, maybe longer. i dont use tiktok but it bled into the commentary of some youtubers i watch and at one point listening to these sermons and the such, i was like time to rapture myself outta here for a bit.
