I’ve added a “domains to avoid” page where I list domains that aren’t real websites, but hosted on Medium or Substack. The former has always been a content farm, and the latter is not only a content farm, but a Nazi bar.

Two questions:

1. Would blocking substack.com and medium.com in uOrigin (or the equivalent) solve for this? I guess there’s also an element of naming and shaming these
2. If the above doesn’t work, I wonder if you would consider providing the service of a downloadable list that can be ingested into something like uOrigin, Piehole, or whatever eqiuvalent. Spread the blocks and love or whatever.

Pushed a tiny little update to my site.

• Added a simple CSS sheet for the holiday.

I’d be more ambitious with the CSS (Like changing the BG of the quick about me page.) but I hurt my hand today (Unrelated cause.) so I’m having a hard time typing as is. I had to use a markdown to HTML converter to write a section of the status.

updated my ascii art museum! the css + html was such a mess oh my god. it’s not pristine now but it was SO BAD before. it’s still a little cramped feeling, so i’ll probably do a bit more tinkering at some point, but for now i’m happy with the improvements.

Today I added some much needed pagination to my Bookmarks page.

Figuring out how to surface the tags so that surfers can browse via tag like they can with my posts.

It’s not ready to push, but I’ve been breaking up my novels into separate pages per chapter, starting with my 2009 draft of Starbreaker. This is how it looks so far, but I’m not satisfied with the template; I think I can make it more generic and thus reusable for my other works.

I just remembered I had something I wanted to tell you about your site. Since you have a lot of anchor links you can make the overall experience 1% better by adding a scroll-padding: 1.5em; to the :root

This way when someone uses an anchor link rather than getting this

With the title right at the top edge of the screen they get this

With some breathing room. I personally find it a lot more pleasing, especially on mobile

I recently abandoned Wordpress and remade my site from scratch as a static website. Handwrote the markup and styling, and (with the help of an LLM, I can’t code!) wrote a custom static site generator in python.

Been spending the better part of a week writing a post on that whole process. Including a couple of hours today. Going to be a long one.

i posted four premade layout templates i’ve made!!! they are here. i’m very proud of them! i don’t know how USEFUL they are, but they were interesting to make and that’s what matters, haha! i spent all day today on the tumblrlike one. lots of tinkering to make it responsive.

dismayed to find that cutercounter is down now, i used it for counters on two of the layouts… hopefully it’s just temporary.
