Is this guy for real? This silly internet beef is getting beyond insanity.
Aren’t DHH and Matt W. both firmly in the “more money than sense” camp?
I’m starting to believe no one has sense in this stupid beef. But my god Matt is behaving like a 5 years old. What even is that post.
It’s Matt asserting that he’s got a bigger johnson than DHH. These two overprivileged clowns need to have a boxing match or a makeout session or something.
It really does feel like a post just to show that yes. But I’m honestly baffled by the whole situation. Like I don’t understand what is Matt trying to do or if he’s having a meltdown in public. It’s such a bizarre situation.
I don’t really get it, either, but I’m sure as hell glad I’m not dependent on WordPress to run my website.
Oh yeah totally. I’m personally enjoying following from the sidelines. I left the Wordpress years ago.
How do you like Kirby? I’m just curious since I’ve got my own custom toolchain based on writing my own HTML.
I absolutely love it. I use it not just for my site but also for pretty much every client site I build. I love it because it allows me to create backends that are custom made and I can let clients manage just what they neet. But also, it’s completely non opinionated when it comes to site structure.
So it’s not like WP that starts with posts and pages, tags and categories and you have to work your way around it.
And it’s highly logical in the way it works and since it’s file based everything revolves around those.
For example, do you want to create a new recipe style blog post with a different layout? No problem.
The post is stored in a recipe.txt that will automatically try to load a recipe.php controller and a recipe.php template. You can also automatically pull in stylesheets and scripts and it will look for a recipe.css and a recipe.js in the specific folders.
It also has a very nice learning curve because almost all features are optional. You can start with a simple setup and incorporate more complex stuff as you get more comfortable with it.
And, since it’s not an SSG there’s no buld step. I can log in to my backend and do whataver I want and hit save and everything is updated instantly. Which means I can post from everywhere. But since it’s file based if you throw a cache in front of it is almost as fast as an SSG.
Sounds like a toolkit I would find attractive if I haven’t put as much effort as I had into my own setup.
It honestly is a great piece of software imo. Many people don’t consider it because it’s a commercial product and we live in the age of free tools but I personally like to use a commercial product for work stuff. It’s a small team, they’ve been around for more than a decade at this point and they run the whole project with a great mindset. They don’t try to grow silicon valley style, they take their time to build things the right way and that’s something I appreciate.
Also, the entire panel is completely optional. You can just as easily run it SSG style with a push to deploy approach. Folder names are mapped to urls so it’s only a matter of creaing a folder, adding a txt file in with some content.
This is your entry on my server for example.
I have a pb.txt template because I use a slightly different style for those interviews. The .jpg has a companion .txt file that contains the metadata (this is just width, height and a few extra info I use to display images with a fancy style)
And the interview itself is just plain text. Each field is separated with a ---- and they have a key at the beginning. So in this case for example the interview itself is stored inside Text:
and at the template level I can just do $page->text()
and grab the value.
If you want to see how it works I can send you a copy of my site. Since it’s file based you can just spin up a local server and it should run straight away. It only requires a few very basic extentions (Requirements | Kirby CMS)
Pretty cool how this drama is happening across websites rather than Twitter for once!
Well, DHH sure is tweeting but yeah, at least Matt is using his blog.
It’s important that open source licenses can’t be one-sidedly revoked, but this is a recipe for regret.
The smartphones are open source, so are the smart TVs, but there’s a lot early contributors to the underlying technologies might like to take back given how those platforms have turned out.
I think when big businesses mix with open source licenses at some point something is going to happen because the forces at play pull in completely different directions.
I’m seeing some general disillusionment in open source going around these days, especially in places where it’s really not treated with respect it deserves. emulation community just had a drama where the developer of a PS1 emulator DuckStation made it proprietary because a retro arcade company Arcade1Up forked it and modified it without releasing the sources, acting in violation of GPL. the dev doesn’t seem to be doing well in general, hence why many find this decision hugely baffling, but it’s also quite understandable ngl.
I would have enjoyed watching the WordPress drama from the sidelines if not because I am currently employed to be a WordPress developer, so although I don’t use WordPress to build my websites, I don’t enjoy watching the ecosystem of an open source software that is a core part of my day job being put at risk because of one overprivileged clown’s tantrum. I want Matt Mullenweg to be removed.
And sure enough, this buffoon had deleted the blog post. What a complete shit show
Nobody in this mess is without faults but Matt’s behaviour is so beyond unprofessional and ridiculous I can’t believe what I’m seeing/reading. Is he having a public mental breakdown or is he trying to become the Muskrat 2.0?
The situation with the ACF plugin is just plain crazy.
My sentiment exactly. WP is not all I do, but it’s a significant enough part of my day-to-day that I’m more concerned than entertained.
Sadly I don’t know if Matt can be removed but yes, it would probably be for the best. If nothing else so for the way he’s embarrassing himself and WordPress as a whole…
He really does sound like Musk 2.0. It is such a baffling situations and i’m genuinely wondering what the end goal is.
