I finished reading Careless People the other days and I wrote up some thoughts.
This was a fascinating read, even if almost all of it is beyond my understanding. I particularly liked the section on optical zoom. It makes sense that phones have limited space, but I had no idea some of them get around this using mirrors rather than digital zoom.
Love your digital garden. I’ve just lost more time than I care to admit have a good look around, but it was time well spent
I am really enjoying your writing. It’s always very engaging and thought-provoking, and this latest is no exception. So many good uses of AI here. I particularly liked your ideas around tipping and ensuring front line staff are fairly compensated. Thanks for sharing.
Yo this is a great deep dive on skinning that unearthed many memories I forgot I had! I remember discovering the Zune theme for Windows XP—really the only alt skin they had, sort of a consolation prize for all the customizability taken away relative to Win 2000—and obsessively switching over all the computers in our school library to use it. It is kind of ironic that will all the “improvement” that has happened in the software development world since then—esp. popularizing the notion that everything should be a modular and separate code from data—our desktop environments have become more monolithic and their designs dictated from on high.
The idea of the browser start page as a modern approximation of that spirit is also very insightful. It made me think about how much time I spent in my browser nowadays and how little time I spend looking at the blank desktop. In the past I obsessively tricked my desktop out with widgets and a cool wallpaper but now I’m like, do I even have any files there lol.
@Leilukin Your site is super polished for having had it for only a year??! Or did you have the site for longer than the domain? Either way, congrats on the site birthday and happy pride!!
This (emphasis added)
There are only a few things you truly need:
- the ability to connect to the internet
- an email address you can use to sign up for services
- the ability to read and handle looking at large amounts of text
is too real, haha. I was talking to my dad today and he was like “what are you reading these days” and I was like, oh all kinds of stuff and he was like “like what?” and I was sitting there like uh,,,, the entire internet
The Weekly Wrap Up is posted! Links this week include virtual drum machines, a herd of puppet animals, a pink fridge in the middle of nowhere and a surrealistic compliment generator. I completed another quick cross-stitch project, got a new oven and, as usual, I listened to, read and watched things.
A skateboarding clip and some comments shared…
Thanks. My website itself has existed longer than the domain name, for almost three years to be exact. I did not have a domain name when I initially hosted my website on Neocitites, so that blog post was celerating the birthday of the leilukin.com domain name specifically.
went on a bit of a rant, idk why i published this really but someone might find it funny

Talking about some updates to my site, and spending a few paragraphs about how my latest endeavor to make a 3D Melvian has shifted my artistic direction:
This post was so cool! I miss the days when everything felt way more customisable and fun.
My PC wallpaper is actually just plain black these days. I’ve heard it wastes less energy and it’s definitely easier on my aging eyes lol. I might look into adding some cute widgets and I’ve been meaning to make a custom start page since I saw a thread about it on this very forum.
Regarding phones… I feel so nostalgic for the Nokia 3310. People used to customise them so much, there were a million cases, you could use a little composer feature to make your own ringtones, and I remember services where you could buy ringtones or 1-bit wallpapers.
I have a few posts to share, but if the below aren’t to your liking, read all my posts
Not sure when I last posted in this thread… Looks like not since my latest couple of posts?
Interesting blog post and I just loved your lying examples.
This was great and actually insightful, and the examples gave me a good laugh!
After using Bandicam as my PC gaming screenshot and recording software for almost a decade, I finally ditched Bandicam and switched to OBS Studio:
Posted a writeup of last night’s Traveller RPG session.
A month long slumber didn’t happen. I finished the second half already:
