I’m so glad you were able to actually enjoy this one! I also grew up in an authoritarian household, and I’ve had to deal with similar anger about how I missed out on things. It still rears its head every now and then, but with time, it fades, especially as I’m able to take control of my experiences and be kinder to myself than my childhood was. I hope all your birthdays are just as wonderful

I wrote about how I spent the Qingming Festival days in 2025:

The Weekly Wrap Up is here! Links this week are about a mystery font, a collection of fans and untangling an English countryside relationship from the 1800s. I stocked up on cross-stitching supplies, made a sign and did the usual listening, reading and watching of things.

Ah darn, I hadn’t thought of the tariffs affecting embroidery supplies… I still have half a roll of DMC Aida, but had been meaning to get my first evenweave for blackwork. Do you mind sharing the place you ordered from?

I did that week of collecting ads thing. It ended up being a lot less interesting than I expected. …In hindsight, I should have anticipated that.

Not that you need it, let alone asked it of me, but I approve wholeheartedly of these sentiments.

After far too many months, melvian.net is officially finished!

This doesn’t mean I won’t ever touch this site, I’ll keep tweaking it and adding stuff to it for sure. What this means is that ā€œmaking this website decent and editableā€ is something I can finally check off my list, and it’s no longer one of those ā€œthings I’ve been meaning to get doneā€. One less thing I have to do!

Also as part of this overhaul, I’ve totally rewritten my old ā€œMisconceptions I had about artā€ piece, which can be seen here:

Hello, it is I, the folkmoss, risen from the ashes of real life and back into the internet.

I’ve posted something on my blog that I really wanted to share and get people to sign, it’s a petition to ban a r*pe-fantasy video game from Steam. But I don’t go into details or anything, I just give an overall idea and the links to know more about it and take action.

Aditionally, I’ve included a fun reading recommendation to balance out the horribleness of the video game; it’s a sci-fi flash story that’s sweeping awards nominations left and right.

So there you go, A Call to Action & A (Very) Short Story Recommendation.

Don’t worry; I’m not leaving the cafe.

After the post on infocide I suppose we should have seen the foreshadowing

Take care of yourself, and your wife. And best of luck with the book

I had made a point of saying that I wouldn’t be leaving the cafe when I shared that post.

I just said I’d be letting my website lie fallow for a while, and that being on Bear Blog and Buttondown wasn’t doing it for me. I didn’t say anything about quitting 32bit Cafe.

If I do leave, it will be because @xandra or one of the other staff have asked me to leave.

Thanks. I’m just a little stuck in the third chapter. My protagonist needs a lawyer, and it had occurred to me that it might work out well if one of the antagonist’s circle – Elisabeth Bathory – stepped in. But now I have to justify it character-wise as something more than demonic caprice.

In which I continue to overthink the whole POSSE thing (tl;dr the state of the world got me sufficiently shook that I’m starting to think ā€œmore syndicationā€ is the answer…maybe it is, idk).

Me shitposting last year:

Is POSSE more about meeting people where they are, or yelling loudly enough so people notice you?

But syndication isn’t inherently bad. Intent matters. Last year I rambled at length about why I disagree with the POSSE concept for me, but your framing about wanting to invite conversations feels very real and commendable. Good luck if you run any experiments here. I’ve occasionally thought about Bear Blog just for discoverability.

Not exactly a new blog post but since this is a blogroll thread I think posting this one here counts: https://blogroll.org

I was asked to become the new custodian of this lovely project and the new version is online. It’s a V1, many things are missing (including an RSS feed) but I had to start from somewhere.

The new version looks sweet. But if you’re thinking of doing a RSS feed, could I suggest also creating a OPML file, so that people using compatible feed readers can subscribe to everybody en masse?

Already in my todo list. Will do both global and one for each category.
