The discussion around these issues has been totally warped since the ugly hatchet job half the media did on Flappy Bird in 2014.
Further complicating matters: experts on addiction seem to be, by the numbers, not so good at their jobs.

If they think Flappy Bird was bad, Iāve got one word for them: HoYoVerse. Hereās another: Roblox. And another still: Fortnite.
Iām not convinced that āaddictionā is even the right word. Iāve been obsessed with games, but never physically dependent on one the way somebody addicted to opioids can be physically dependent on them.
i actively play two out of tree
not to come off as too much of a pretentious twit, but,
as long as youāre sincerely having fun and not opening them out of a sense of āeh, might aswell,ā good for you legitimately. I do hope youāre not spending money on them tho, because the pricetag of an average character in those games* is about 3 decent indie titles by independent creators, and gives you a fifth of the satisfaction said titles would give you.
*yes I know about freemium and that in many cases you can technically get anything thatās gameplay-relevant for free. but if playing for free was really that lucrative, their revenue figures would not be as high as they are; casinos donāt get to line themselves with gold by giving out money.
Oh that is such a fun and interesting blog post! Thank you for doing the legwork, and for enriching my day :D
And Iām a longtime Final Fantasy XIV subscriber, so I donāt have that much room to criticize. Itās your life and your money.
Hoever, Iāve never bought glam, emotes, or mounts from the FFXIV online store; if I canāt get it in the game itās not worth having.
Actually- actually. Iāve said the whole āyou could get a better indie game at that priceā shpiel to enough people that I feel like I should back up my statement.
Wow thank you so much for researching into this and even contacting the originator of da stamps! I used to be on deviantart and honestly still have a fondness for stamps even if I would get mad reading the comments on political ones
I also like the snippet you included from his bio too. Itās a bit bittersweet to see how former da staff wanted da to be a good community for artists, but how it devolved. Deviantart may no longer be āa digital place where everyone can share their creative spirit, grow their artistic talents, and expand their worldsā but at least now we have that in the form of the indie/personal web :3
iām not sure what you mean by that! which numbers and which jobs are you referring to?
yes i do spend money on fortnite lol
Wrote a thing about working in a hospital during Covid.
Content warning for this one I suppose.
Neat list! A couple I didnāt know about~
If you like Vampire Survivor type stuff, you might find Snake Farm fun. Only $3, less than half a carton of eggs!
Just a little memory of my time in community college, talking about addiction and poverty cycles. I tried to write something more lighthearted but! This came out instead lol.
here we go: Blogging For The Hell Of It
I put together a little script to help me keep track of what work Iāve done during the day, and in the process got much more comfortable with shell scripting.
Im already typing up a response bc that comment about drafts gathering pixel dust really triggered me
FeyFall | blog : this oneās another vulnerable one, but itās pretty long. almost 3000 words ;-;
To be honest here, this post seems pretty mean spirited when all @optimisticlucio was doing was offering a list of cool indie games that he sees as giving you more value than a gacha pull. His post did not at all come across to me as a moral judgment on you. Your post also responds to points that werenāt even brought up by him, yet they are disingenuously presented as if they were. Whatās up with that?
I also have to push back on your point that āmicrotransactions arenāt a scam if youāre not a dumbassā. Obviously not all microtransactions are the same, but gacha games specifically are designed to be slot machines, employing the same tactics literal casinos use to keep people engaged. Not every player will develop a gambling addiction, but some will, and that is what these companies are counting on as a business model. On top of that, unlike casinos, none of this is regulated, making it incredibly accessible for anyone to gamble, including (and especially) children. Again this is not a moral judgment on you pulling on character banners, I say this as someone who has also spent a small amount on Honkai and Zenless, Iām just pointing out that the very nature of these games is predatory, and being able to engage with them without falling into the trap doesnāt change that.
yeah, i can see how it could be seen as a bit rude, sometimes i simply cant hold my tongue between my teeth. i can remove references to him/his blog and phrase things differently. so lemme edit that real quick.
