ykw? that could actually be a compromise im willing to make eventually. like title and a few sentences and than a read more link. but thatās future me problem. coding anything on mobile is hell. ill think about it when i have PC access again
App developers hate me - post reflecting on various app/website/social media things and how annoying it is when functionality suddenly changes when developers decide to go in a different direction. (I get it, I work in development myself, but as a user I still find it annoying.)
Yeah, thatās the idea! Already have a few ideas on how to refactor the code and make it more efficient. Or, at least, fewer lines.
Yeah, Iām considering setting up an even more bare-bones āSSGā to turn all my personal (offline) notes and writings into HTML files to make browsing them a little bit more convenient. I think thatās a good opportunity to try and use shell scripts to power the process.
Good on you for quitting social media. I think itās a step thatās going to make life better for most people.
Feel you on the Youtube conondrum. Iāve been veering away from subscriptions and renting the past year as well. Now host all of my photos and videos myself, instead of relying on the cloud. And just about finished taking my book collection from Amazon into Calibre. Music is coming up shortly on that list. I guess I donāt legally own a lot of music, but will start by ārippingā all of my records and build from there ![]()
got it, never change the UI of my website! (haha im teasing dwdw)
no i totally hate when they change shit outta blue⦠still mad at discord mobile app for an example
Youāre welcome to have a look at my scripts. Iād suggest starting with my makefile.
https://git.sr.ht/~starbreaker/starbreaker.org/tree/build-dir/item/makefile
I have a shell script called āprocess-html.shā that builds pages from a template. On my site, every page has an āindex.htmlā file containing the text, and an āindex.txtā file containing metadata as shell variables.
https://git.sr.ht/~starbreaker/starbreaker.org/tree/build-dir/item/process-html.sh
I also use sed, awk, m4, and a bunch of tools from the W3Cās HTML-XML-utils suite to process text.
https://www.w3.org/Tools/HTML-XML-utils/README
hxincl is particularly useful; it lets me include static partials as if I was using server-side includes or PHP instead of building everything locally. hxtoc is handy, too; itāll generate a table of contents based on your pageās headings.
As long as you never stop blogging, which is my favorite part of anyoneās site! I love to see your thoughts and (specific to you) I love that you curse and have no qualms saying whatās on your mind!!
Thanks! I am going to try my best to stay off. I admit Iāve been experiencing withdrawal
Itās been tempting, but Iāve been good about finding other stuff to do (or do nothing instead). The hardest part is knowing Iām missing out on the news, which I will now get much slower (end of the day or week feels soooo slowww now). But I also think thatās better, it hurts my brain to see the breaking news AS ITāS HAPPENING all the time. Sometimes itās nice to get a summary of what happened instead.
Iām looking into getting the technology that would allow me to rip my cassettes but I didnāt know you could get something to rip records. I would love that - what are you using? I have a lot of jazz records that donāt seem to be available online anywhere (they were all less than $3 in a bin at some shop, Iām sure).
Dunno if this will help, but I created and eventually deleted at least half a dozen Mastodon accounts since 2017. I sometimes joke about how I have less trouble quitting vi than I do social media.
While my website classifies this as an article rather than a blog post, since I recently mentioned being diagnosed with a genetic eye disease that can lead to loss of sight in one of my replies to @ttywitchās posts, I may as well share my article about living with the eye disease that I just finished writing in this thread:
I wrote a bit about why I love feed readers and how they remind me of other ways to browse the internet:
(I noticed rinaās post right after publishing the post yesterday⦠an interesting coincidence!)
weāre like polar opposite lmfao both in opinion and language
i really appreciate you writing this. you and i have some similar day to day challenges with our visual disabilities, and it was nice to see someone express these same challenges that iāve dealt with for a long time
Thank you for your kind words, Emma. I am glad to hear that my writing about my visual disability has resonated with you. That means a lot. ![]()
I found your frustrations with YouTube very interesting.
Iāve also recently walked away from YouTube entirely, but for entirely different reasons, so itās pretty interesting to read someone elseās completely different issues leading to the same decision.
I used the platform entirely through 3rd party front ends (Freetube on computer and GrayJay on mobile) so I never had the issues you describe with negative app behaviours.
I left because of the effect youtube and its algorithm has on the content itself and how low quality and user hostile almost everything on there is now, For every good thing you find on youtube you find like 5 things that are mediocre and 10 specifically designed to make you upset/angry, and youāre incentivized to spend way too much time sifting through crap.
The early post YouTube grind is difficult but I think youāll find it worth it, the algorithm makes it easy to find things but more organic recommendation sources seem to lead to better results overall.
That feeling of discovery is back now, stumbling on a great album or a really cool thing to read/watch feels exciting, not just good, Iām probably missing out on a few of the most popular things, but all that time burnt on the YouTube morass is getting channeled into weirder, more interesting avenues instead.
For the one or two channels you really value every YT channel actually has an RSS feed, all you have to do is paste the full channel URL into your reader, then you can just throw the links into YT-DL as they come in.
The Weekly Wrap Up is posted. Couple of cool links, what Iāve been reading and watching, got to spend some time with a friendās kitties which was nice since Iām still catless.
Unfortunately, I did not pass the probation period of my first web developer job, so my current employment will end in early January 2025:
Iām here to drop another hot take
https://riri.my/blog/i-left-the-no-ai-webring
This take isnāt very hot tbh, quite reasoned in fact.
Please acquire worse opinions and sloppier reasoning, I need volcanically hot, apocalyptically bad takes.
if said hot take as AI is unpopular on here.
if you want actual hot take, i guess my anti-rss post is hotter
