In another thread, I mentioned that I’ve only seen a couple of activity or workout logs (think an indieweb Strava replacement). But I’m sure there must be more out there that I just haven’t found!
One of the good things about Strava is that you can see what other people are up to, and I find that very inspiring. One of the things I miss about Strava. So I thought I’d give a go at curating a replacement in my feed reader. (Of course, that assumes people generate an actual feed for their workout logs, which is one of the things I haven’t got around to yet for my own workout log… So I guess I’ll have to hurry that up, since I’m posting this!)
Do you or anyone you know have an activity or workout log on your website? Share it in this thread! It’ll double as a source of inspiration for those of us working on our thing. I’ve got loads of stuff yet to do.
I use an app, https://hevy.com/ on my phone/watch to track my weight lifting sessions. It has a bunch of social features where you can see other peoples workouts, I have these turned off.
The app itself allows a CSV export of workout data that I could use in the same way that I display my beer data from Untappd. I will look into this at some point when I have a moment.
I’ll have to login to the old app I used as that had years of workout data. I’ve got a bunch of small notebooks in a box somewhere with workouts recorded before smart phones…
My SPIN classes are tracked on the workout app on the apple watch, that data is sycned to the health app, I have no idea of how available that data is for exporting…
I would not share GPS or map location data with any of my workout history
I really love the idea of a workout log and I’ve been thinking on implementing something like it for a while (and you have an impressive amount of data in yours, must be cool to look back on that!)
There’s some half-finished designs for a workoutlog/dashboard I have floating around in my git somewhere, but the data for it is all over the place. Most is inside a variety of apps that I quit using, some is in one very big excel spreadsheet. Now that I think about it, that used to be my favorite because I was really free in what I wanted to track (duration is always the same and can’t tracking biodata during workouts because wearables would pose an injury risk - so I rather focus on corrections I get, things that went well, and occasionally how injuries are doing) Maybe it is time to get back to that during the fall and autumn months
I don’t have one, but I’ve wanted one and yours inspired me to get started. Right now I’m stuck at “mount my watch as a storage device.” I’d much rather pull the .fit files off my watch than try to go through the garmin or strava APIs. Once I figure that out, I’ll be in business.
Yeah, that beer log is conceptually pretty close. Nice one! And reconciling all my workout data in one place, instead of having it all scattered around in various services which might or might not consider the data mine.
Can definitely see why someone might not want to share GPS data publicly. Personally I’ve done that through Strava for years, and never had a problem with it. But I’m thinking about doing it “halfway” on my workout log (inspired by Smashrun) and simply generate an SVG of the track of my GPX coordinates. To show the route, without placing it in actual map. It also nicely solves the issue of not wanting to rely on third parties to serve any part of my site. Which would be maps, in this case.
I’ve got more than the total time span of my workout log on you (looked at your site!) so if you get going anytime soon you’d have me beat by a good margin by the time you reach my age I’m also not too far off three sets of 12 pullups, btw. Race you to it?
Yeah, if you have a newer Garmin, I think you might be out of luck. If you have an Android, you could look at Gadgetbridge. It’ll let you pull activities from your watch wirelessly, but without feeding them into a cloud service. It’s pretty neat!
The Garmin API is impossible to get access to as a hobbyist, I think. I used a third party Python package that uses the web UI, I think. But it got my account locked down, twice. So that wasn’t the best option
You actually got me motivated to get started during uni today - I’ll work hard on getting older and collecting more data I wish I was not too far off three sets of pullups, I’m still trying to master the humble push up - I do try my best to deadhang every few days tho as a therapeutic measure, so that will SURELY aid me in this race haha.
If I recall correctly, there was some talk about a oura-like fitness ring people got access to via gadgetbridge, too - I’ve been thinking about that, too, but time remains a limiting factor.
