I’m currently building a startpage for myself and had the idea to make it look like it was running Windows 98. I’d been expecting to have to Frankenstein together a bunch of images of Windows 98 graphics, but I ended up finding 98.css, a CSS library that faithfully recreates the Windows 98 look. As far as I can tell at least I’ve never used Windows 98 lol
I figured I’d share it here in case anybody was looking for something similar, it’s been super helpful for me so far.
Along similar lines, there is xp.css and 7.css for fans of newer Windows designs. And system.css for classic Mac fans.
I think these kinds of css projects are super fun, people get pretty creative with them.
oh I’m going to have to figure something out with system.css, Even though the System era of Mac OS leaves a lot to be desired, I do like the interface
These are so fun!
I poked around and found the person who started 98.css - he has a nice post about why he made it and also his site looks like an old MySpace profile!
That was a good read, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this. I really need to create something by using 98.css now
In the past I used 98.css and xp.css on my website, and I still think they’re really neat, but I have transitioned away from them since I found them a bit too heavy for my limited usecases. I instead wrote minimal CSS that is less accurate (especially for XP), but a lot lighter and still evokes the general feeling.
You can see my stripped down 98 look here and my stripped down xp look here. I suppose y’all can always have a look at the CSS in case something more lightweight fits your websites better.
Your website just gives me that authentic year zero vibe. I love those buttons (any cool website had to make use of hover buttons back in the day).
I love your website design in general and the nostalgia corner featuring screenshots of old pc games in particular inspired me to do something similar (soon). I may make use of your stripped down css as well.
Thanks! Feel free to look into all my CSS for some inspiration, though it might be a bit overwhelming given that it’s a handcrafted mess. ![]()
