so crazy to see args like this back in 2008 - so much of this has come to pass, and at a scale and intensity that i doubt the author could even fathom.
one thing that stuck out to me that’s tangentially related to the article: a lot of the links in the article body and in the comments are dead now - especially links to sites like livejournal! it really serves to underscore the ephemerality of web 2.0 spaces and the ways that its boosters misled the public. at the end of the day, markets cannot be trusted to be the stewards of communities or their histories.
