Which Part of the Indie Web Ethos is the Bigger Priority?

Yeah, I had mentioned that almost a year ago in a rant about a bluesky-adjacent grift called “Free Our Feeds”.

Knowing this, I can’t help but suspect that “Free Our Feeds” is some kind of scam.

I don’t think it’s an intentional scam, in that it seems to me these folks believe in what they’re selling. Unfortunately I do think they’re being scammed in that they’ve been tricked into believing that decentralization is an answer to the money question.

People should have their own websites, and people working in tech should be working to make that easier and more accessible to the greatest number of people.

That’s an ideal that takes us back to the issue of onboarding and its associated questions. I’ve seen some interest and ideas in that direction, but it seems difficult to really track or coordinate the followup.

I don’t know about IndieWeb because that’s very tech-focussed, but to me, the most important part of the personal web is curation. It’s not an algorithm throwing things at you, it’s a person, choosing things they personally find interesting, and sharing them for others to find.
