the subject of trying to make a personal website when your “interests are all over the place” came up
This line stuck out to me from the very beginning, because websites are great when you have interest all over the place! You don’t have to brand yourself and stick to one thing, you can make pages for anything you like. Pick one to begin with and slowly add more!
you can see me writing notes for myself and learning in public. I’m not a cheese expert, so who am I to write about cheese? Well, anyone can start reading those entries from the bottom up and learn with me.
Yes!!! Despite not being an expert in anything, I make a lot of informative pages to help others (and myself when I’ve forgotten) because I feel I have a fresh enough experience of what it was like to be a beginner, that I can better help beginners by remembering more what I struggled with, things that have become second nature and “obvious” to experts. My rainbow site is also an entire manifestation of the idea of learning in public. I make each page as I am learning about the topic, and edit them when I’ve learned more or to correct misunderstandings of my own.
Putting notes-to-self on your website with things like keyboard shortcuts for your favorite software or famous quotes you don’t want to forget, like a commonplace book (wikipedia.org) can be an amazing resource for yourself. And other people will find it useful too!
I also like to do this ^^ My fonts, symbols, html colors, rainbow gradients, and css tidbits pages are all examples of this. I use them for my own reference often, but its also nice if other people use them too ^^
This was great. This introduced me to Dave and Ratfactor (at least as far as I can recall), and I really appreciate many of the sentiments he shares there. Sharing was really helpful to read.
The act of quietly adding things is something I should really practice myself
I have recently gotten into the habit of calling my blog posts “essays” and that extra level of pretense makes it way harder for me to pull the trigger lol
