websites where you can get real, nice images for free

Found via Molly White. We don’t need to rehash everything about image generators here, but I thought some folks at the Cafe might be interested in this as a resource list. My go-to is usually the Creative Commons Search Portal (which uses Openverse), and I also emailed the post author to suggest Old Book Illustrations.

Are there any other free image sources that you like to use?

For stock images I tend to use Pexels, for many other things like logos or photos people have taken of things, typically less professional photos, I use Wikimedia Commons

Just a heads up, the CC search site doesn’t work super well if you select Google Images. Sometimes there’s results from sites that seem kind of off, I don’t know if they’re just reposts of potentially copyrighted images.

I think these just about cover everything I use but I’d add sites for museums, national libraries, etc. because they often have galleries with nice licenses. Sometimes they post their stuff on Flickr, or someone puts it up on Wikimedia, but not always, so it’s worth checking!
