Hello, I’ve noticed a few webring threads floating around made by people posted here directly in the Cafe that often get lost in the shuffle because they usually don’t garner that many responses.
I don’t feel like making an official topic when I’m not even a staff member here, it feels wrong. So I’m wondering if there was a way they could all be categorized in a tag, or listed somewhere on the forums; my first suggestion would probably be the Resource List since there’s already a category for making your own webrings there.
But if it’ll be a pain to track, I’m open to the idea of a tag instead. What do you think?
i think a tag would be ideal since that could apply to threads where someone is doing an interest check before actually making a webring, something which is useful to find when browsing but a bit odd to put in a directory/list!
& with a tag nobody has to be on top of maintaining a list/directory. a mod would have to go through and retroactively tag topics, though, so i guess it’s a similar amount of work for Someone
I like the idea of a tag. I’d require some upfront matinince to tag old posts, but after that it’d be pretty low effort. Most people would just tag their posts themselves, and I imagine that adding a tag to the few that forget would be a fairly easy tag.
Plus, IMO, searching the tags would be easier than searching the resource list. It’s quite long! So if there’s any chance where we can reasonably get away with allowing things to stand on their own seperate from the list, I think we should take it.
One option would be making a wiki post (which is what the resources page is) so that it is editable by others. It requires some maintenance like a tag would, but the burden of doing it could be shared by several people, as opposed to a tag which can only be added to a post by the OP or a staff member.
I do want to push back on this idea slightly. If you feel there is a thread that should exist but doesn’t, please create it. The “official” thread for something is the one that people use, regardless of the OP. In fact, having an initiative like this be managed by a community member is definitely helpful to the staff, as it doesn’t add to the always-growing pile of tasks we have already taken on.
That’s something I’m not sure is guranteed. Part of why I was hesistant of making it in the first place is that if it does not receive much responses by other people and constant maintenance by me; it’ll be buried and new people coming in would not be able to see it to post the webrings they’ve made in that thread, making it less than useless.
I do not have the ability to pin something nor can I convince every single person to move their isolated thread there if they don’t want to.
hey @cosy_diner if you want to kick this off we’ll be happy to pin it in the appropriate place.
Whenever a new related thread comes up you’ll have the ability to edit the original post to start creating the index of threads!
The mod team is here to make sure things run smoothly and everyone has a good time. Part of that good time is empowering community members like yourself to do things like this!
Alright if it’s possible to pin more than one thread in the Webweaving category, then I’ll make an official thread there. I just need to collect some of the webrings I’ve seen around and put them all in one place (as well as determine if they’re being actively maintained)
Thank you for the reply and thank you for everyone for the feedback
I will contribute to your open community wiki project about webrings. I already have a list of 101 webrings that I maintain myself and I wanted to create a thread like yours here on the forum before so…
Contributing to your idea and making the directory bigger just feels like the right thing to do :-)
edit: after digging into your post, my offer doesn’t make much sense anymore. There is not much I could contribute because my webring directory isn’t centered around webrings made by 32bit Café users. It is more of a general list of webrings that I currently check for activity to update the list and continue to do so (hopefully) at least once a month in the future after the first completion of activity checks.
Having a community curated thread about active webrings where I could slam dunk my updated list entries into and having other people helping to update and extend the list for a greater good and as a community would be dope.
Should I open up another thread for this since? Feels kind of odd to open up another thread with the same topic. Hi-jacking cosy_diners’s thread feels even more off, considering the intention behind was to feature a list of webrings that have been created by the users of 32bit Café.
I feel so wasted right now. Trying to write down my thoughts feels like communicating with an alien Any1 else? I’m off, I’ll take a nap
