What are your New Year resolutions in regards to websites or web tech?
Mine is to have a “no-buy” year on domains. Sounds crazy, but in the last year I’ve purchased about 12 domains that are totally unnecessary and expensive! (That first year sale on Porkbun is my enemy!)
Do you have any goals relating to your website projects? :D
into the new year i’m going to continue studying javascript. but my big goal for next year is to really get comfortable with a backend language. i am thinking PHP since it is on almost every web host
I think I might try making more new pages rather than reworking everything again and again until it inevitably becomes outdated. Although I don’t like looking at my old stuff, I just don’t want to take forever trying to figure out what I want for those pages. I’m reverting back to my perfectionism again, and it’s not letting me make sites that have shit people can look at and explore. I want to let myself be messy and not always have everything prepared beforehand.
Bring back the full archives. I’m just done with 2007, so missing 2008-2015. Didn’t post thaaaat much those years, so it’s probably done over a week’s worth of evenings. But very boring stuff.
Clean up the post and notes archives template. It’s just one long list at the moment. I want to group content by year and month, and then create a nice index at the top.
Bring my reading log back online. Didn’t prioritise this when I ditched Wordpress, but I really want it back now. I liked having it there!
Set up a blogroll page. Want to generate it based on the opml file from my feedreader, so that it’s easy to update.
I guess that’s four things, but who’s counting? I’ll probably end up doing 35 other things instead, and none of the above!
Hm… I think mine would be doing more CSS on my site. It’s almost where I want it to be in terms of HTML and Eleventy (barring images and some buggy behavior with Eleventy breadcrumbs). So next up is making it look snazzier~
thank you for making this thread. it got me thinking about my goals (in general) and also about my websites.
new layout. i’m dissatisfied with the way it looks currently. sort of… plain? i’d like to align it more closely with my personal style.
i have a domain, ghostx68000.com, that is unused. i’ve long (since ~2014) envisioned this as a web game, as others in the community here are enjoying and making, so i’d like to flesh that out. a prototype exists on some old computer, somewhere, but i can’t seem to find it online anywhere.
integrate my website with my physical surroundings. i was recently inspired by this custom newspaper printed daily on a dot-matrix printer. this is a little vague, but i’d like to pursue similar projects. i’ve though about working on a personal-only website, something hosted on my local network and available only within that space.
regular cadence for blog posts. i fell off the wagon a bit here, and while i’m beholden to no one but myself, my inner voice is wishing i’d written more, lately. @DivergentRays weekly wrap-up comes to mind.
finally (for now), being more diligent at linking to my net-neighbors, friends, acquaintances, that interesting page i saw, and so on. the web depends on it!
First off, I’d like to remind everyone to go and take a screenshot of your website as it is now. I do this every year, even though my layout only changes minimally. Over time, it’s really neat to see them stack up!
Secondly, here are a few things I’d like to get through:
Figure out my reading log and how I want to start updating it again. I have three different places I keep track of what I’m reading, and none of them are really ideal. I want stuff reflected on my website somehow, so I need to sit down and do some thinking.
I’ve got several games and toys I’ve been working on, and I want to finish up as many of them as I can, and them put them on my website. I’ve also got an Arcade page I’ve been working on as an interface for them all, and that needs to be finished too.
Add more artwork to the site. I’ve got some ideas for adding more image galleries, but I always put off the scanning/photos/importing part.
Probably tons more projects I’ll come up with as the year goes on, including utilizing my extra unused domain names.
God, I have so many and realistically, I know I’ll be able to recycle some for 2026 too
I feel like a full redesign is due - I think I never finished the original design I had in mind and now it could use some more love. A themeswitcher could be fun?
I think there is some space for a blog somewhere, with how much I’m writing lately. Maybe a small webgarden? Who knows, who knows!
Continue learning and connect with people more - on that note, I have the opportunity lined up to teach people at my Uni the absolute basics of HTML/CSS and if at least one person catches interest in the personal web, I’m ready to consider everything else secondary.
