Upgrades to our Technical Infrastructure

Hello everyone!

@kaylee and I have been working on some upgrades to our technical infrastructure over the past few weeks.

  1. The SSO has been migrated into the cloud. This puts it in a more reliable environment so we can lean on the SSO more for all of our services. You probably won’t notice much here except that the login flow may be slightly faster.
  2. The Discourse forum now has a dedicated database cluster. The SSO required a dedicated cluster, which means we can double-dip and use it for Discourse as well. What this means is that the forums should be noticeably faster, especially on topics with lots of traffic (like the blogroll post, for example)

Other than the performance improvements, these two upgrades do not really affect your day-to-day interaction with the community, but they do lay the groundwork for several upcoming changes that will.

  1. Discourse logins will be SSO-only. The intention is for the migration to be relatively seamless, requiring only a password reset when you login after the migration is complete, and only if you did not previously have an SSO account.
  2. Email and FreshRSS will be moving to SSO as well. The migration of these services is more complex than Discourse, and we’re not certain if these can be SSO-only, so we’re evaluating options here, but the expectation is that your 32-Bit Cafe login will work.
  3. All future services offered by the 32-Bit Cafe will require SSO. Going forward, you’ll only ever need one login to access all of the services we offer.

The timeline on these upgrades is not totally clear yet, but we’ll update you when we have more information to share. As always, please reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

I’ve been using SSO already for Discourse and FreshRSS, so I’m all set.
