There’s still other issues with AI that keep me from using it even in the way this blog describes, mainly due to environmental impact and data collection. But in a vacuum, I can absolutely see and agree with these points.
And if I mag be so bold—it’s almost as if the biggest problem we have right now is a work culture, especially in the U.S., which leaves people exhausted on all levels and thus more likely to rely entirely on A.I. to do everything for them. That A.I. is just another problem on the pile proving a need for cultural change, yet making it harder to achieve due to providing a sense of comfort and releif to those uncritical to it.

I agree entirely—the biggest problem is the need for “progress,” even at the cost of real progress. People are expected to do more work in the same (sometimes less!) amount of time because of all the advancements in technology we have. I’ll probably share this article with my teacher friend; she’s had to fight with her administration about the promotion of AI usage, and this article points out the major reason why it shouldn’t be used in schools—it fails to let students build the brain muscle they need to learn.

Extremely interesting article. Where do we draw the line? I’ve attempted to use Claude to do things I could have done myself. I asked it to code a sort of screensaver, because - while I don’t trust them at all - I wanted to see a result. Its basic, it works, it was simple, its math. But it works. And the results are it works. Academia isn’t entirely results driven, because you need to have their checkmarks, checkmarks from that specific pen or that stamp; the quiet nod of agreed superiority.
But then another agent is inept at coding, but good at general basic information. Press it and it falls apart. I asked it a question in a field of which I am considered an expert, and it said “This sounds like a question from a highly skilled expert”… I didn’t have enough side eye that day.
Beyond the security theatre of handing over our information to the machines, I do wonder what the use of these technologies might be in the future?
