Tester Feedback and Questions

getting into the final stretch here—3 more days! any other feedback or suggestions for how we can make this experience better?

I don’t know if this is possible, but the way replies are organized is really clunky and it’d be nice if replies were just left nested into the original comment instead of it showing up as a new comment too

i think what you’re describing is more of a social media reply system—since this is a forum, the replies here are actually the same as they would be on a phpBB forum or any kind of “forum”-style setup. discourse even seems to go further by allowing the expansion of nested replies, but typically forums don’t have that.

i don’t think we’re going to be adjusting the way the replies work because we want it to feel like a forum. the “normal” way of replying to a post in a thread is to quote the post. you can still do that.

ohh okay thank you maybe its bc Im not used to the amount of new comments under one post

i noticed that the valentine’s day event no longer shows up on the event calendar, now that it’s over. is there a way to keep past event visible? it might be nice to look at the calendar retrospectively, so we can say things like “wow, look at how much we’ve done!” or easily answer questions like “how long has it been since our last event?”

this is a small thing but i noticed the profile icon of a replyer appears at the bottom of their reply and moves as you scroll up until the top of their reply is visible. not a big deal but just wanted to point it out in case it’s something that you guys don’t like.

I have a question regarding the old 32 bit cafe forums. What will happen to them now that the discourse instance has been created and established? Will some of the posts be transferred here? Or will everything be archived?

that’s a good question!

the idea is to sunset the discuss link aggregator and redirect the resources list to the resources list here.

everything will be archived via the wayback machine unless someone does a manual archival. things have already been up on the internet archive for a little bit already, so we’ll just probably redirect folks there with a working archived version. if someone wants to download all the links or compile them somewhere, that would be amazing, but staff doesn’t have the bandwidth to do that at the moment.

@testers: we’ve now launched the SSO at https://auth.32bit.cafe - this is something that @kaylee has been working on for a while and it’s finally up & at 'em!

we’re asking that you all sign up for a SSO account using the same username on discourse, which will then be tied to your discourse account, especially if you want to opt-in to services we’ll be launching later. in the future*, you can also easily get an email address by signing up with the SSO, as you’ll be given one upon registration.

if you do not want to do this, that is totally OK. this is meant to be helpful. we want to offer this as an option for easy login and sign-up, especially for folks to want to have an easy access method for their email, discourse, etc., all in the same place.

if you have any issues with this, please let us know so we can help!

* edit: apologies, this will be coming soon! see kaylee's message below.

awesome! i just signed up. the verification email got sent right away and i was able to use the SSO to log into discourse with no issues. :+1:

i’m not sure that this is automatic? when i try to log in with the SSO on mail.32bit.cafe, i get “OAuth login failed. Please try again.”

thank you for raising this!

when you log into the SSO on auth.32bit.cafe, does it take you to a screen where you can then click into the email?

also ccing @kaylee so she sees this

Dang, the verification e-mail went straight to spam on this Outlook address.

Also unable to authenticate for webmail.

Ah, the auto-email thing hasn’t quite been set up yet. If you ALREADY have an email account, and your username is the same as for the SSO, it will automatically connect the two. Otherwise, you still need to request an account if you’d like one.

This’ll get further streamlined in the next few days so that every SSO account gets an email address automatically.

Sorry for the confusion!

Deliverability to Outlook is a known problem, unfortunately. This is for both the automated confirmation messages and personal emails from @32bit.cafe accounts. With other providers like Gmail, Protonmail, etc there seem to be no such issues.

I think it’s in no small part due to the young age of the domain, because emails from another domain which I’ve had for several years get through to the inbox without a problem.

As I understand it, simply building trust over time will help with this. I.e. the more Outlook users who whitelist our emails / mark them as “not spam”, the better. The converse is also true, so N.B. to all please be careful not to accidentally click “mark as spam”! That could hurt a lot at this stage.
