Some of you might know that I’m pretty keen on sharing links I find interesting across the web. I keep an archive of them over on my Bookmarks. I also make these available via feeds, Atom and RSS.
I’ve been thinking about pulling these out and creating a separate link dump post, probably on a monthly cadence (I wouldn’t be able to keep up with a weekly cadence).
My thoughts are that this might be more desirable for people who are keen for new links to surf, and just the links, rather than having to wade through my life stuff. Might make them easier to share and pass the link around friends.
What do you think? How do you like to consume new links?
Depends. I follow a linklog via RSS, and another blog that posts regular link dumps. Getting others on my Mastodon feed. It can definitely be a good idea.
Personally, I follow bookmarks and links in different ways, so I’d say go with what works for you.
But this did make me think about how I share links, and I realized that I actually treat them differently depending on the type. Things that I will refer to many times go on my bookmarks page, which has an RSS feed for updates. Cool websites or links that I want to share with people but probably won’t need to refer back to go on my blog, as “Link Roundups.”
Seems like linkdumps are back in vogue. They are all over my feedreader these days!
I think sharing links is great, but I find linkdumps to be a bit overwhelming. I’m personally more in favour of the old linklog approach, where you quote and link to a single post with perhaps a bit of commentary.
To your actual question, though, I think separating “linkdumps” for personal updates and so on makes sense, because of the separation of concerns, so to speak. Honestly, though, I’d just do whatever makes the most sense to you here. I don’t think it makes too much of a difference either way.
I’ve been making Linkspam posts on dreamwidth for a few years now. It’s been nice both to share, but also for me because I often have a lot of really useful information and explanations in that post. Like, I bookmark a lot but sometime I loose track of things, especially articles. So, I specifically prefer blog formats with tagging for that sort of thing because I approach it from a research/sourcing/archival perspective.
I do think that having separate “link dump” and “general”RSS feeds is a pretty solid idea! It’d give people more control over what they’d want to see; I imagine there’s some people interested in your personal posts that don’t care much for the link dumps for one reason or another. So, if it won’t be too much for you to maintain, I would recommend that :]
Maybe I should think of making an RSS feed for when I update my linkhoard…
