resources list meta thread

a thread for chatting about the resources list! suggestions / questions / spitballing ideas / et cetera. in the interests of keeping it tidy over there

@xandra mentioned in the discourse chat wanting help with updating the list! so i went through and counted how many links there are in the various categories, in case that’s useful information for somebody who is wondering where there might be some gaps. of course i think the more the merrier so it’s grand to add links to whatever wherever. just thought this might be helpful for reference.

from fewest to most links (as of today, august 15th 2025, for future reference):

  • Less Than 5 Links: Graphics Generators, Beginner Javascript Guides, Fanlistings Directories, Graphics Guides, Retro Utilities & Programs, Other Software & Utilities, Beginner Self-Managing & Server Guides, Domain Name Registrars, Social Media Utilities, Password Managers, Analytics Alternatives, Other Service Alternatives
  • 5-9 Links: Counters & Analytics, Layout Makers, Text Cliques & Clubs, Placeholder Images, eCommerce Alternatives, Productivity Tools & Programs, Hosted Services for Websites, Paid Webhosts, X-References, Email Newsletter Software, Free Stock Images & Illustrations, Image & Art Utilities, Service Proxies and Frontends, Code Generators
  • 10-19 Links: Guestbooks, Indie Advertising Networks, Webweaving Utilities, Zines, Search Engines, Creating, Managing, and Finding Webrings, Creativity Tools & Programs, Hosted Forms, Color Palettes, Common Webmastery Issues, Widgets & Components, Beginner HTML and CSS Guides, Accessibility
  • 20+ Links: Free Webhosts, Typefaces & Fonts, CSS Code Generators, Browser-Based Graphic Editors, Code Snippets, Free Blogging Platforms, Engines & Static-Site Generators, Free Layouts & Themes, Pixel Cliques & Clubs, Directories & Listings, Free Graphics & Website Materials

that last one has the most by a wide margin btw - 75 links! (would splitting it up be a good idea? should there be a separate graphics wiki, or is it best to keep everything in one place? such questions are the sort of things one could discuss in this meta thread)

a separate list for graphics might be useful yeah

I think it’s fine to have a big list of free graphics sites because you don’t need to choose only one, and it’s not a big time investment.

If it’s an SSG you probably only want one and it takes time to learn so I hope people are only adding an SSG that they have used themselves and recommend.

A site like AlternativeTo is probably a better starting point for software that’s a serious time investment.

Two examples:

ran a dead link check! removed some broken :headstone:

fixed some:

bloglist.me timed out for deadlinkchecker and for me, but downforeveryoneorjustme said it’s up, so i left that one on the list.

added links to kalechips’s and pixelshannon’s web host reviews to the web hosts section! wasn’t really sure where to put them so if there’s a better spot pls move em.

also added my public domain hoard to the graphics site links

i hope objets isnt gone forever cause i totally wanted to join it…

prooooobably the owner just changed the url with no redirect in place? maybe reorganized? it happens a lot on the indie web. some poking around would probably turn up a new url for it, i’m just not familiar enough with them/their site to know where to start! if someone can track it down please re-add it

I found this site: ://ABOUT

No mention of Objets that I can see but maybe it’s the same person? There’s a guestbook/contact section.

i think that’s a different person!

objets was by pastelhell - it seems like they’ve maybe been offline for a bit and some of their domains have lapsed, since juice-bar also went down recently.

That’s disapointing, maybe they’ll return eventually, though. Was Objets the one with the little shopping pixels?
