Wasn’t sure which subforum/topic this was best posted under, but I figured the people most likely to have an answer to this question frequent this subforum more. So!
I want to play some games in my terminal, in part to get more comfortable with it and in part to get more use out of it. I just think it’s neat! I’m vaguely familiar with NetHack and Solitaire TUI, both of which I intend to try out, but that’s about it.
Do you guys have any more suggestions of games I could try out that run in the terminal? I guess I prefer “quick”/mini games like solitaire and Tetris, but I am absolutely willing to learn and play something lengthier (Like NetHack… can be. In theory.) Really, “can run in the terminal” and (preferably) “does not require I install additional libraries to run” are what I mostly care about.
Rogue is still good, and widely considered a casual game now. For that matter, anything else from the bsd-games collection. I played gomoku quite a bit for a while. Another that springs to mind is ninvaders. For that matter, piu-piu-SH is a visually impressive side-scrolling shoot’em up written in Bash. And of course thousands of text adventures.
Does your distribution provide the bsdgames package? It has a bunch of little terminal games. Colossal Cave Adventure is one of them, as adventure. There’s also a Star Trek themed game called trek.
bsdgames did not come pre-installed, but installing it was simple! Unfortunately I’m seeing different lists online for what games are bundled in. So I’ll have to keep playing with it to see what I got. But a bundled package like this is perfect for me.
If you’re on Debian and have the non-free repository enabled, rogue is in bsdgames-nonfree. Other distributions probably package bsdgames differently, which might be why you see conflicting information online.
Yeah I’m on Kubuntu for the time being. I just have plain bsdgamesinstalled, as it is what I found. I’ll have to keep playing with it; tetris isn’t included, nor was Rogue, but trek was.
I may uninstall bsdgames and install basgames-nonfree in its place :]
In this game, you are robot ( # ). Your job is to find kitten. This task is complicated by the existence of various things which are not kitten (collectively known as Non Kitten Items or NKIs). Robot must touch items to determine if they are kitten or not. The game ends when robot finds kitten.
There’s a port/clone for just about every system ever made, each with its own quirks. Finding each kitten only takes a minute or two, so it kind of feels like a relaxing minigame.
