hi! i’m interested in starting a webring, but had a few questions i wanted to ask before getting into the weeds of it!
i was specifically interested in creating a webring for fans of the game rhythm heaven!
i am considering having it more broad to include other rhythm games as well since i’m worried about not really getting any members, but i’m worried about keeping the styling consistent/in theme.
is there a preferred/typical size/dimension for webring formats?
i want to make the widget as customizable as possible, but i’m interested in using premade sprites/images so wanted to see if there were default dimensions i should start off with!
also if anyone has examples of webring widget designs, pages, or anything i could take inspo from, would love to see!
i also wanted to know if there were any recommended ways of accepting forms for the webring? looking for a free service that i could embed/stylize onto a join page and get notifications for new entries!
also if anyone has any advice/tips on anything i haven’t mentioned, would love to hear and just have it in this thread as a reference. thanks so much for your help!
I think an answer will depend entirely on your answer to the question: “What kind of webring technology would you like to use?”
There’s many different ways to host a web-ring. Some are entirely manually maintained, some use a single script embedded onto each member’s website, some use frames… there’s a whole host of different methods with their advantages and disadvantages.
The ultimate page on web-rings that you rightfully see recommended around the web is Brisray’s:
This page details the entire history and technology behind web-rings.
Brisray also maintains some other informative pages on web-rings on their website:
Only partially related to your initial post, but I don’t think that having a webring exclusively for fans of the game rhythm heaven is a bad idea. I know that you initially mentioned being afraid of not getting any members, but you’d be surprised how quickly webrings can grow-- I’ve always had the best experiences with ones that are very specific with what they’re for. Just my two cents!
there’s not really any standard webring widget format in my experience! webring widgets are a variety of sizes… i think usually people try to keep them small-ish, but not always. some webrings’ widgets as example:
webri.ng and onionring are popular webring technologies that i know about.
form handling wise, i’ve only used tally.so and googleforms; neither are really customizable sadly :/
if you’re comfortable with javascript you could probably rework ayano’s guestbook widget / use that technique to do a customizable google form, though?
