Hey there,
I understand that the vibe that the 32bit Café forums aspire to give off is nice, constructive and civil.
I agree with the decision to implement profanity filters, partly also just as a spam prevention measure, but also as a way to potentially calm people down before posting something during an emotional moment they’ll regret later.
However, is the profanity filter list manually maintained in some way? I have run into some odd censorship that I don’t think is intentional.
For example, I cannot say “g*d damn”, but I can say “damn” just fine. Same with “bloody hell” and “wanker”, “fuck” or “asshole”.
But they draw the line at the Lord? :D
It’s not like a huge issue to solve or anything, but it feels a little arbitrary and US-centric at times.

I agree with profanity filters too, and that does seem like it might be a problem (and lead to a scunthorpe situation :)). Maybe a workaround could be just having the admins look over flagged messages? I think the forum is small enough that that would be pretty feasable.

This was just a list we took from somewhere else so there have been a lot of words we have removed manually, like fuck. It might be time to revisit the list.

I’ve noticed that I have to refer to certain cats as “Maine Shag cats” instead of their more common breed name because the more common name contains a word that is also an racial slur I’ve only seen used in old Stephen King novels. Not a big deal, but it had struck me as odd.
(And those cats are shaggy. And they tell shaggy cat tales when they want an extra meal, too.)
