Multilingualism in a Global Web

@ZinRicky is hosting this month’s (October '24) IndieWeb Carnival , and for its topic he’s chosen: multilingualism in a global Web. In the post he mentions 3 potential perspectives:

  • that English is the language of most of the Web
  • threatens other languages, which are considered sub-optimal in the context of the Web.
  • the interesting linguistic experiments that are artificial languages, such as toki pona or Ithkuil, and Latin-speaking communities.

I think it’s a really interesting subject for discussion, one that should persist beyond its ~30 day time limit. If you’re at all interested in participating, all you have to do is write a blog post by ~November 1st and get it to ZinRicky.

This thread is for:

  • Any that missed the event and still want to share their link / writing on the topic.
  • Any response, opinions or thoughts that you feel don’t warrant a whole blog post.
  • Back and forth conversation of the matter.

As for my thoughts? I’m not really sure to be honest… Maybe that’s the real reason for this thread. Lol.

P.S. If you’re at all interested in hosting an IndieWeb Carnival , please feel free to DM any questions you may have or assistance required in signing up! It’s currently booked through almost all of 2025… But 2026 is pretty open!

This is a very interesting subject, and I think I have a draft of a related blog post saved on my hard drive that I could update and edit. I might participate!

I’m so happy to read that. I still remember when you got in touch because the situation was looking bleak at the beginning of the year.

Just submitted! I had a few different ideas but I decided to talk about teaching and learning in a second language and what that ultimately says about accessibility to information.

Unfortunately, I didn’t finish in time. :^( I will still be submitting one, despite my tardiness. Apologies, for the delay; expect it in the near future. On the bright side, I get to read everyone else’s posts and draw ideas / avoid repeating / dive deeper from that.
