M. John Harrison: "agency"

I got clued into M. John Harrison via Michael Moorcock. He’s kind of a writers’ writer, not being content to write ISO standard sf or fantasy or litfic.

I assume that with ‘hybrid writing’ they were referring to this?

Maybe, but I’m not gonna spend 12 minutes watching that. I’ll spend hours reading a novel, but IMO any video of somebody talking for more than 60 seconds needs a human-written transcript. Better yet, it should have been a blog post; I can read faster than these TEDx people and video essayists can talk, and most of these people talk too much and say too little.

"Hybrid writing is a form of writing that blends elements from different genres, styles, or mediums. It breaks traditional boundaries, combining aspects of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, academic writing, journalism, or even visual elements like art or digital media. For example, a piece might combine memoir with research-based writing, or merge prose with poetry. The goal is often to explore new ways of storytelling or presenting ideas that can’t be captured by a single, conventional form.

In the digital age, hybrid writing might also integrate multimedia, linking text with images, audio, or interactive elements."

I understand where you’re coming from*, but it seems, in this case, a video could be beneficial, given its potential visual nature.

Maybe, but you can’t grep a podcast or a video essay. That’s why I find them annoying and won’t use them if I can avoid it. If they can’t be bothered to write it down, it’s not worth my time.
