I’m hoping to buy one of these as a gift! What would you recommend?
Usage: Reading ebooks, pdfs, and cbz (and similar stuff) using ReadEra. Maybe watching a few things with VLC and also basic streaming apps like Netflix.

I have no recommendations for a specific device but I wanted to point you towards MobileRead Forums which is everything e-reader. It’s been around forever and is still lively. They have a specific “Which One Should I Buy” section if you wanted to pose this question over there, too.
A few of the popular options include:
On Android, KOreader is highly praised:
It comes with a detailed manual / user-guide:
And, best of all, it’s 100% FOSS. Despite being targeted primarily for e-ink devices and not necessarily worth switching to if one is content with their current software, it offers a lot of settings / user-control, wireless sync with Calibre (another app I love), and more. While I understand that too many options can be overwhelming for the majority of people, the feeling of discovering settings for things you didn’t even know you wanted to adjust can be pretty awesome.
While I wouldn’t recommend a Kindle something worth pointing out is their easy potential to be “jailbroken”:
Jailbreaking is the (legal) process of exploiting the flaws of a locked-down electronic device to install software other than what the manufacturer intended; like KOreader!
i already had a kindle that a family member bought years ago so i decided to jailbreak it and KOreader has been really nice. i wouldn’t really recommend people buy one just for this though cause theyre really expensive new now and from recent vinted searches theyre not really that cheap second-hand
Third support for KO-reader (I use it on Kobo!) It’s really useful if you read PDFs especially.
