Magdalena Bay is so good!

And @convexer - your blog made me think of a book on my tbr list called The Art of Frugal Hedonism. I am too very scrunched much of the time and one of my goals is to enjoy life while I’m living while also saving as much as I can so I can spend when it’s really important - not delivery I don’t eve want because I’m too burned out to cook. It’s hard to be wired to be “productive” all the time because society rewards it so heavily that it’s hard to justify learning to take life moment by moment.

did a small diary entry, but since it’s the first of 2026 I’ll count it as postable!

I’m hoping to start some larger discussion with this but don’t want to be presumptuous in starting a thread for it myself, so if there’s any interest here in weighing on in this, please let me know.

Edit: wow I got the date stamp drastically wrong. That’s been fixed now at the original but I guess once the link preview is generated, what’s done is done.

Edit: separate thread here.

I just read this. It will take me a while to think about. Really good article though.

This theme of “grow the movement” vs. “gatekeep” crops up in all sorts of countercultural communities, both those we like and those we don’t.

For example, in Christianity there is the whole “narrow is the gate and difficult is the way” idea vs. churches trying to make services more accessible and convenient. In activist groups there are the moderates who want to find common ground and make incremental progress vs. the radicals who want to establish litmus tests on who is allowed to participate. I remember reading in the newspaper after the Charlie Kirk shooting about different types of white supremacists with a similar split between those focused on “marketing” to new converts vs. radicalization.

For me, I hope the indie web doesn’t have to have an ethos. I view it as a hobby, not a religion. I do indie web the way I want to. If someone wants to shit on me for like, being a gatekeeper because I know how to write JavaScript then I will probably feel bad about it for a day, but ultimately earning that person’s approval is just not my goal.

I feel like if the platform is owned by billionaires or big corporation, whether you have your own domain name or not, is questionable. I friend of mine announced 2 days ago that he has started a substack. I was disappointed but not surprised. He’s a smart but not clued-in and wouldn’t care anyway.

I really don’t even like using WordPress for concretelunch.info even on my installation on dreamhost. The corporate feel just permeates the platform now, exemplified by the absolutely horrible themes.

I’ve been thinking of offering friends a 1-hour lesson in starting you own site. Very few of them will want to dig into HTML, etc. I intend to point them at PIKA.page, bear blog, and micro.blog, and explain the advantages of each. While none are "self hosted”, I think they are good compromises and aren’t owned by evil scumbags.

Of course, even domains aren’t something any of us can actually own under the current DNS system. ICANN owns all domain names; we merely rent them on an annual basis, and ICANN has the authority to void our leases at any time.

I understand The Future is not equally distributed and a welcome party aims to build local remedy for that. To that end, I’m not moving from my position anytime soon; I am not going to pave my own road any sooner than I going to build my own hospital or sewage or host my own node - give me healthcare, give me housing, and give me a space, full stop.

If it’s not for someone whose every dollar is already being sucked up by survival, then it’s not for everyone.

Yes. I won’t, my person, be engaging with ICANN. I wait for my library, neighborhood park, of local university to save, host, launder, and distribute my content to my community. World burns much, much cleaner when the individual recognized doesn’t suffer trial-by-fire to exist.

A full alternative stack to the american internet recognizing america as no neutral distributor sees tractors being bricked, sanctions being raised, is left no alternative, so comes to a fore; or it don’t. I leave my internet presence in the belief of the former.

I’ll get back to my displaced kleptothermy now.

Just a retrospective post and not a very good one at that:

At least I finally got around to writing my first blog post of 2026! I was feeling kind of blocked.
