im thinking of getting a 2nd domain to use it for GDLand but i dont know if i should wait until august so that it renews at the same time as the one for the rift or if i should buy it now so that the costs are more “staggered”.
the satisfaction of the dates lining up would be great but i worry that if i ever end up with less disposable income it could become too much at once.
There’s no rule to say you can’t renew a domain before its renewal date, so I tend to renew my domains whenever I have the spare cash. Sometimes, that’s even 6 months in advance when I’ve deluded myself into thinking I won’t change my mind again in 6 months time. 
If you want the dates to line up, you can absolutely register the domain on the same day and then just renew whenever. The dates will still match up.

Almost, because by pure coincidence I bought them around the same day of the year, four years apart.

Nah, mine are staggered out, and I like it that way. Better for my income bracket to pay them a little at a time.

No. I prefer paying across the year anyways since the prices have been increasing over time.

No.It feels like I have a domain renewing every month. And I’m too scared to log in to check, so now I’ve started registering new domains with another registrar.
I didn’t register my domains at the time, so I don’t renew them at the same time.

I generally renew them when they’re close to expiring. I have them set to autorenew through my debit cards as well.
