How does one Make a custom Startpage

I’ve recently changed a lot of things about my use of the internet and need all my new apps along with other stuff i could code something up but i need it done fast and cheap what resources are there. Any free services?

Dunno, maybe a service like straw.page? Never tried it. I made a plain old webpage for myself and stuck it on my Codeberg site.

Do you mean a start page as in the page that shows up when you open your browser? If so, you don’t need it to be online. You could just keep it on a folder on your PC and set your browser to open the page file by default. You can do this on mobile as well.

If you want to easily switch between devices, you could host it somewhere for free. Check out the list of resources here on the forum.

As to making it, I think most people just use HTML and CSS. If you’re into making stuff for the web but don’t know those, I really recommend learning. However, there are services that will generate a page for you… again, check out the resources thread. In terms of making a personal dashboard, I’ve also heard of people using Notion or Obsidian for that, but I don’t use them so I can’t give you a more detailed explanation.

If you need inspiration, tips and tricks, etc. check out our very own thread about custom start pages: Custom Startpage!!

I use the “Perfect Home” browser add-on as a new tab replacement because it reminds me of Speed Dial from the old Opera browser. It’s got a box you can paste custom CSS into.

I don’t think you need a service. Maybe it depends what features you want.

Hi! Here’s mine, I just host it on Neocities. I could host it on my computer, but I kind of prefer a live site I can pull up wherever with all my main links  Feel free to use any of this code, the bones of which originally came from sadgrl.online

Cool.. how do y’all get the weather data, i need to compile a Wheelchair report. Basiclly uses some probability and data to determine if it’s safe to use the powerchair or not

I just used a simple weather widget but that sounds like a really good idea and use of weather data!

Went with simple and classic https://tilde.32bit.cafe/~pius

I think it might help if you can tell us what your skills are right now.

Maybe there’s already a wheelchair data report out there. I couldn’t find it by Googling, but presumably that service might have some documentation that can help you out.

If you want to create something that generates that output, you’ll need to find some kind of weather data API; there’s lots out there that you can choose from based on what you need. You’d then use your language(s) of choice to make those calculations based on the data it gets and make it into a visual thing you can put on a dashboard. I think this is a good idea but if you don’t have a grasp of how these concepts work, you’ll want to learn first.

The stuff people use for weather on their start pages are probably scripts you can embed that work out of the box or with minimal tweaking.

Just burned out after 20 years in the software industry. Wanting to get back in the game, on the side of good this time. Ye Wheelchair Weather appp was unique last i looked

this is VERY cute and I WILL be using it as inspiration to organize my own start page (been messing with it for a few months now, on and off, and it’s… well, a bit of a mess still)

Let me clarify, the scope of work here I think I’ve got it. I needed something that would solve the immediate need of killing off the news feed in my new tab window. In a fun and attractive way, I think I’ve achieved that with what I have right now.

Then there’s this second group of goals redoing the wheelchair wether app for one, consolidating a few RSS feeds et et, that can wait until I’m feeling better. My CSS styling has always been more function over form, perhaps a weather widget to fill in the gaps. And maybe pull headlines from like sixty eight news or something. So what I want is a low fidelity textual way to interact, with a few icons thrown in for spice. Sorry for monologuing about my design, but there is a design

perhaps I could start it as a service eventually.

I love the idea of putting your RSS feed there! And the background animation is great
