Good Internet Magazine: a regular publication for the small web

Ordered my copy. I’m sure the magazine will be great!

Oh no!! The first pre-order mail was sent to spam automatically  so I only now saw there’s 24h to preorder.

  • Is international shipping tracked? If not, is it possible to request it be tracked, even for an added fee?
  • How much will international shipping cost after the pre-order is done?
  • How can we buy more than one physical print? Or is it something we cannot do while in pre-order?
  • Can we buy just the physical one (or more than one), without the digital?
(sorry for the barrage of questions, trying to figure out what I can afford)

Also, just wondering - how did the pricing come to be? I’m surprised that digital and physical versions are priced the same. I was under the impression that only the physical print would be paid to help cover costs here and there. No judgement, I’m just curious to understand how the process works (and a little bummed out because I thought I’d be able to buy my friends some copies), but I imagine there’s a lot of associated costs and unretributed labour that went behind this project from the organizer(s?).
Thank you so much for all the work! I will get my hands on at least one no matter what! :meow_cheer:

i will have to check and see if this is feasible when it’s time to send out magazines. at this point, i won’t be able to do it for the pre-orders; by offering free shipping, i’m already kind of maxing out how much of the pre-order goes into the printing costs (which was the whole point of pre-ordering in the first place).

likely $10 USD.

there’s no limit, as far as i know. you’d just have to go through the transaction again.

the digital copy is included with the physical copy, so you can forego it but the print magazine will still be $20.

the price of the print magazine is $20. the digital copy is $10. if you buy the physical copy, you get the digital copy for no cost. that was the price that could pay for current printing costs and digital costs of ghost, domain, etc., (all about ~$1,000) and at least partially support the next printing of the magazine. the idea is to keep it on a rolling basis financially so that i’m not last-minute raising funds for the printer.

unfortunately, i cannot float this project in any capacity. i’m currently unemployed, so i cannot spend hundreds of dollars for printing and have my costs only be partially covered here and there. printing costs a LOT, especially at the small scale we’re printing at.

i hope answering these was helpful!

so sorry for missing your question! i thought stripe was pretty versatile especially with international purchasing. i’m not sure if i’ll be able to set up another commerce platform before launch, but let me know any alternatives that maybe i can use in the fall.

Thank you so much for your answers. I think the points you raise are all completely valid, the price just wasn’t discussed before except than the very optimistic first post so it caught me off guard. I’ll keep an eye peeled for info re: tracked international shipping later on once they’re availabe to buy on the website! If I won’t be able to afford it once the shipping and custom duties get factored in, I’ll gladly just buy the digital one for support. Thank you for all your work! :meow_heart1:

Hiya, the website still just has a “enter your email to get notified” is there another link anywhere to pre-order? I never put in my email :)

I put my email in the notification box today and got the preorder link, if that helps!

Just pre-ordered the digital version:)

I’m not sure if your system is ridiculously efficient, or if something went wrong, but I was able to pay in one click without inputting my email or anything.

Stripe emailed me a receipt though so it is probably fine (?)

EDIT: Also thankyou for all the work you are putting into this

totally understood. i didn’t know the final price until we had already started this project. i seriously underestimated how much printing costs would be (i estimated around $300-$400); i thought i could float that. :(

stripe is pretty good at that kind of thing! as long as all of your information was right, it should be good. :) i’m glad you got a confirmation email; we were having trouble with that earlier today.

and thank you so much, truly. this has really consumed my life, LOL. i’m thinking we might do this twice a year.

i would love to contribute/help out if it is needed, what a rad idea this is. i look forward to it, in any case.

I don’t know if it would be too much trouble, but you could set up a Wise account to handle bank transfers and just have those that need it contact you and set it up that way.

No worries!! I was able to ask someone to lend me their card and ordered the magazine yesterday. I didn’t get a confirmation e-mail though and hope everything worked. :crossed_fingers: I have never used Stripe before so I don’t know what it does and doesn’t do, and when.

Cool, are these the names of articles on the cover?

not all of them! :) but we did have to cut a few stories and we’ll be running them instead in the fall issue!

I hope you would have warned the authors about this in advance?

unfortunately it was more an issue with the quote and the printing costs, so no—the pages were laid out & expected to be in the magazine until the print.

in an ideal situation, there’d be wayyy more communication with writers for this issue but there just wasn’t enough time. it’s also common in publishing, though, for this to happen—“evergreen” stories get pushed all the time.

just to reset expectations, i want to make it clear that i’m doing the jobs of 10+ people that would be hired at a traditional magazine: sourcing stories/working with writers, editing, designing & laying out 40+ pages, working/communicating with the printer, art/imagery, building the website, setting up ecommerce platform with legal compliance, designing & testing email blasts, subscriber management, customer service, and shipping. (unfortunately, folks i reached out to help ended up either ghosting until it was too late or weren’t able to help at this scale.) so, to reiterate, i’m doing it all myself—i’ve been working 60-70 hour weeks for the past two months to get this done in time, and we’re squeaking by the deadline i set.

so while yes, ideally i would’ve set the standard of notifying writers beforehand because i want to be different than typical magazine publishing companies, wasn’t quite possible this go around.

i’m hoping that, now that our initial infrastructure is being set up, things will be easier for me to manage. :)

Oh goodness! I hope you get to take a much deserved break once everything is said and done ;-;

I can’t speak for every writer of course, but I’m not too worried if my peice is in this print or fall’s print. Just be sure to take care of yourself!
