free or cheap hosts for dynamic content?

hey there!

i’ve been browsing through the resources list and other topics in the webweaving category, but i haven’t been able to find anything that matches my criteria.

i’m looking for a fairly cheap or (preferably) free webhost that supports node.js, since i’m using astro and its integration, astro db, to build a custom guestbook (and maybe a commenting system?). i looked up cpanel and it could support node.js websites but i think there’s extra steps? i’m not sure if that feature would be available on the webhosts that do use cpanel, but please feel free to correct me.

i… kind of want to avoid cloudflare, even though i know their free tier is extremely generous and that they’re technically powering their infra on green energy. ever since watching some video of a person getting fired from cloudflare without any explanation or justification, it feels a little bad to support the company. (which seems silly to say while living in the middle of a dystopian capitalist society, i know.)

any suggestions or pointers would be great.

I believe Oracle has a free tier as well, but they’re not much better than cloudflare from an evil mega corp perspective.

For Node.js you’d be looking at a VPS, right? That is, I don’t know of any hosts who have it built in. I’m not familiar with any services that offer VPS for free exactly, but there’s a site and forum for folks who rate cheap VPS hosting here:

They have a ton of info, and then you can go into the forums and search around to get user’s opinions of whichever services you’re interested in.

I think running a VPS is probably the best way to go, even if it is more headache. I’ve been using Linode for a while, I think their cheapest tier is ~$5 a month?

NearlyFreeSpeech has node. My site hosted there currently costs me less than a dollar per month, but this will go up as I use more storage.

@yequari @frugalgamer @basus @Acy thanks a bunch for the suggestions!

unfortunate that i’ll need to look into vps, but i’ve heard good things about nearlyfreespeech so i’ll try them for a bit.
