I’m kinda confused what the difference is between the discourse account and SSO is, and would it be possible to merge this account into the SSO?

In a technical sense, they are separate accounts. Everyone has a Discourse account and a git account and a mail account, etc. The SSO gives you another generic 32 bit cafe account, but also gives you the option to use that account’s username and password to sign into the other services instead of managing a separate username and password for each one.
To link your discourse account with the SSO, attempt to log in to Discourse with SSO, then register an account with the same email you used for Discourse. The SSO should automatically link the two accounts.
A caveat to this is that if you have 2FA enabled on Discourse, SSO will be disabled.
