Community Code Jam #5 is Live!

hello, hello! i hope your summer has been amazing, but it’s time to go BACK TO SCHOOL!

:apple: our fifth community code jam will run from august 4th to august 17th!

:pencil2: The 32-Bit Cafe is taking a field trip together this August to help school others in topics we’re interested in! Build a webpage about a complicated concept you love explaining. Create a whole microsite about a topic you wish more people would ask you about or a topic you’re learning yourself. Your submission can be just a tiny part of a larger subject or all-encompassing. The scope is up to you! If you’re unsure of any ideas, you can always dedicate a page to your favorite subject in school, college, or university.

:teacher: Any style of webpage (blog post, image gallery, coding experiment, etc.) is welcome to be submitted to this code jam.

I have a question: does it need to be a new topic we don’t have any pages for, or can we add to a current set of pages we already have, and submit the new pages/content for the jam

For example I have a whole extension of my site on rainbows and color, so if I were to add new pages to it could I submit those new pages for the jam?

I was already working on creating a suggested template for a /dating page (since we now have slash pages for lots of other things). Is that something that would fit in here?

sure, that would work, i think! it would be nice to have an all-new page/topic for your site, but if that’s what you have the bandwidth for, by all means :)

i don’t think that really fits with the theme. this is more to educate others on something you either know a lot about or a topic you’re interested in to share knowledge/inspire others to look into a certain subject. does that make sense?

Yeah, I get it now. I suppose I’d have to pick something else if I want to participate.

school us on emacs or whatever it is you live in :P

hey, quick question. what’s the consensus on an 18+ submission? my topic is about gay media and i wanted to briefly bring up an NSFW concept but i’m not sure if that goes against the rules. i don’t plan on making it a focal point of my submission or anything nor do i want to go super in depth, but i wanted to at least mention it.
(sorry if there are rules about this somewhere and i missed it!)

What if you hid the 18+ material inside a <details> element or put it on a page that people couldn’t access unless they had the URL or clicked on a warning page that warned about the actual page being adults only?

thank you so much for asking! talking about a NSFW concept as part of a bigger submission is totally allowed. as a courtesy, it might be nice to have a content warning. our big concern is being able to browse pages without being inundated with p*rn or gore. being able to browse at work is great! :)

ahh!!! i’m sorry to save this until the last minute, but i’m going to probably finish my submssion later today (august 17, MST) and was wondering how much longer the submission portal will be open? i’d really like to get my page in by then it’s just been a busy week and is going to be a busy day

no worries! we usually close it around midnight pacific time or the morning after if we couldn’t get to it by then. :) if it’s closed, send me a message! i’ll be sure it gets included, even if it’s incomplete!
