ended up tossing this NH candidate a campaign donation after reading this. what if more elected officials did this?
This was a good read
I don’t know how successful it will be, but I agree it’s a way better way of connecting. I also think the fear-mongering style conservatives have been doing the past few decades just translated really well to social media where the nuanced take on things that democrat or independent might do just doesn’t reach as far or drive up the numbers. It sounds like it will be difficult to have people know you exist if it relies on the kind of person that goes to a political meet n greet though. We do need more offline engagement of all kinds to make democracy work.
I hope she can. I think there’s a shot for a congressional district. I don’t know if you could pull it off nowadays for something like a senator or a governor. You just have to reach too many people and the costs for traditional broadcasting are so high. It sucks because this is one of the ways that I used to think the internet could strengthen democracy by leveling the playing field, but that obviously isn’t how it played out.
i have no idea if this strategy will work but i think that it’s amazing that someone’s even attempting this in this day and age. i have long been of the opinion that a radically offline approach could be a gamechanger for grassroots politics and it’s great to see someone actually take that idea seriously.
