I spent half the morning looking into alternative e-mail providers, after spotting this infographic on Mastodon. Haven’t actually tried making an account anywhere, but after reading through a bunch of websites and their terms of service, my favorite so far is Mailo, a service based in France with a no-nonsense offer and thoughtful provisions. Beware that some of the site isn’t translated. (Not a problem for me.)
Runners-up were mail.com, an US-based company I’ve heard of before, and Mailfence, a Belgian company that has a questionable point in their ToS and somewhat confusing plans. There was also a Swiss company, but they were pushing AI hard, so it was a no-go.
P.S. I only looked at providers that have a free plan.
Very cool, thank you! I’m looking up these services and GMX sounds nice and really generous with their free plan, though I haven’t read their terms/privacy policy yet.
I’ve been using purelymail for a few weeks now, and ive gotta say, loving it so far.
dirt cheap if you dont send/receive many emails. Very customizable, and you can use your own domain. as of right now, highly recommend.
I’ve been a paid user of tuta for 3 years and it’s frankly awful, terrible applications, baffling design decisions, premium pricing for a borderline beta product. “Uncomplicated” email my arse.
Mailbox has been pretty good however, I really need to get around to migrating the remaining things I’ve got off of tuta onto it.
I use ProtonMail and Tuta myself but—I’m on an old legacy plan (12 euro yearly) for Tuta since I’ve been with them for years, so I genuinely can’t speak to the plan pricing. I think it’s been fine for me since I genuinely only use it for my IRL mail stuff and don’t really need a lot for it (to keep it separate from other things) and ProtonMail is for everything else (which oh god the automation and folder organizing is so good otherwise I’d hit inbox issues like I do with my gmails, though the price does bite a little bit even for the mail plus)
Uh that’s all to say that’s neat to see other email providers being offered, cause after my 2FA’d 20-character-password gmail somehow(??? i can only presume it was a cookie logger) got broken in to have my … Genshin account stolen of all things … I scrambled off it to find anything else that’s not Google
Tuta and ProtonMail (plus alias emails) have been doing their job in just feeling like I have more control over stuff again and separating things
