this is a bit of a head-scratcher for me because wordpress is one of the reasons why the web looks so homogeneous, imo.
edit why does the official wordpress blog not have embed metadata

In fairness to the guy writing this, he did say that they don’t need any more themes that look professional. But, yeah, if there’s a software monoculture on the Web then WordPress is definitely part of the problem.
If WordPress still works the way it did in 2016, the last time I used it, then I guess they didn’t install an SEO plugin. I’m not sure WordPress provides standard metadata by default. It certainly doesn’t support crap like Twitter Cards or Open Graph data out of the box.
The author has a good point, the WP themes all look corporate. And it’s not just the theme, the WP plugins have lost their weird and whimsy. Plugins today are all about making money for the plugin author, but in the past there were tons of just for the heck of it plugins that were there just for fun.
If you blog you are supposed to be doing it for money. If you make things for bloggers, they have to be about making the blogger more money, to justify that fee you in turn are charging for the theme/plugin etc.
I agree. I’ve been on WordPress since 2006. During that time the themes have become extremely complicated to modify, and they’re almost all terrible and corporate looking. That’s why on my main blog. I simply use a very plain text oriented theme. I’m looking at ways to move it to a static site.
