Hi everyone, I was perusing the indie web database and it didn’t quite explain the requirements for being a web clique. I have a masterlist of owner-submitted indie sites on Pillowfort, but it doesn’t have a dedicated page outside of that social media post. People aren’t required to link back to it. Would it be ok to list as a clique?
a clique is pretty much what people use webrings for now! it is a group of websites whose owners share a common interest of some kind, usually with an aesthetically-appealing button/icon/badge that indicates membership, used for finding potential friends + having a presence in a subculture + getting more eyeballs on your website + expressing interest in something. these days i think ppl use them kind of like fun collectibles, like badges and buttons.
there’s not really a strict definition of what is and isn’t required for something to be a web clique! i think it would be highly unusual for a clique to not have a linkback function, since they are in large part a way of browsing the web, but i don’t think there’s any particular Rules! like most things people bring back from the 90s-00s it’s just for fun and serving a totally different purpose (practically and socially) so you can do whatever you want lol.
that said! the indieweb folks might have a particular definition in mind to do with indieweb components, so if you’re talking about being listed on the indieweb wiki, you could ask there?

Thanks for the reply. I know that the IndieWeb (no spaces) guys are strict about definitions in ways that I disagree with, so I’d rather ask here on the cafe or to the person putting together the database. Your reply already discourages me somewhat from submitting though haha.
