The weird web of the 90s

I’m not going to lie: I feel a lot more vulnerable and exposed doing this in 2024 than I did in the 90s.

Part of that is probably my age and the self-preservation instinct that comes from being a proper adult. But the web is also a vastly bigger place than it was in the 90s, and that’s both exciting and scary.

But for all of my complaining about what the web has become, I thought it was important to put my money where my mouth is and start building the kind of web I’d like to see more of.

Related to this part. As I’ve said many times before, I subscribe to the freedoms and connectivity of the early web, while not trying to recreate an early era look.

I like my website to have a nice modern look without the bloat. There are still ways to express personality without a garish page of clashing colours and unreadable text ;)

I’m pleased to see this! His post from a year or so ago was part of the reason I started looking into personal websites more. I talk about this a bit in my code jam entry (Creating a Website) – I’d been planning to make a webdev portfolio, but when I finally realized work is not a good idea for my health, I took all my ideas (plus a bunch of new ones) and shifted to slowly making a personal website. It’s nice to see he’s now got a personal one after a false start trying to combine things.
