Alas, this only works if the stylesheet leaves the default untouched or specifies auto, necessitating the second style with the span selector above.
I would do this by making the first rule have a selector of q:lang(en) (MDN’s documentation for the :lang pseudo-class).
I’m not sure what their problem is. That if you use a CSS reset you mess up basic browser mechanisms? D’oh! That there are limits to the dirty tricks you can pull off with CSS? Good! What is it with people and rejecting any solution to their problems because the solution has little imperfections.
