suck at something september 2025

:waving_hand: last year i invented suck at something september. well it’s september again, so let’s go!!

people are always trying to be good at things. the desire to do a good job often becomes a fear of doing a bad job, which then turns into a fear of doing anything at all. i hate practicing things because i hate being bad at stuff, which means i rarely get any better at anything! sometimes you must simply be bad at things.

suck at something september

GOOD IDEAS DONE BAD

it is very easy to participate in this event.

STEP ONE: Decide to do something. Come up with a good idea.
STEP TWO: Post what you have decided to do here. Or on your blog or something? I don’t care. As long as you announce it publicly before you start.
STEP THREE: Do it, poorly.
STEP FOUR: Post what you did.
STEP FIVE: Give yourself one (1) sincere & specific compliment and one(1) sincere & specific critique.

as i said last year

the general idea is to allow yourself to make the bad version of something you may think “i would, but i can’t make that because i don’t know how to do [xyz]” or “i wish i could do that, but it just isn’t practical” or something similar about. you can make it, it’ll just be bad - so do it bad. if you don’t know how to make a div do something, brute force an approximation with what you do know, or attempt to learn and give up halfway, or implement a broken version that doesn’t work at all.
try to resist the urge to edit mistakes, polish things, or keep bashing your head against something you can’t figure out. just let it suck, give up and move on to the next thing; if the next thing is “declaring it finished because it’s making you mad,” then so be it!

if you fail at something, do a bad job, disappoint and frustrate yourself, make a bad web page, break your whole code, make a mess, or otherwise Suck At Something, then you have succeeded at Suck At Something September. great job!

the thing you make would ideally be a web page, but if you would really really really prefer to suck at making a sculpture or a painting or something else that is not a web page that’s acceptable.
you do have to put it ON a web page though.
if you would prefer to make something that’s not a web page because you are too good at making web pages, then you ought to try being bad at making web pages instead. it’s good for you!

your suck at something september project is finished when you give up and declare it done enough or at the end of september, whichever comes first.

as with last year, there are …

PRIZES !!

every participant who completes suck at something september will receive from me:

  • an award certificate celebrating their participation in Suck At Something September
  • the right to claim a 32x32 trophy (see below)
  • one (1) sincere compliment and one (1) sincere critique on their submission (if they want)

this year i’ve made a shiny wooden plaque so you can have a new prize if you got one already last year. which i dont think anyone in the cafe did, but regardless.

here is last year’s certificate - this year’s will be slightly different of course.

as you can see, i’m starting off sucking this month by posting this late!
at the moment i am on a sewing kick and not much in the mood for web art, so i don’t have any ideas at all yet. fortunately “running” this “event” is still something i can do a bad job at even if i don’t come up with anything else!

ps. i deleted my melonland account, but if someone who is over there wants to proxy run this there (or give ppl with melonland accounts the plaque/trophy as forum gifts) you have my blessing! :satellite_antenna: it’s really a shame discourse doesn’t have forum gifts.

Lol, does it count when you just made something you absolutely think sucks even though it was not intentional?

If not, I’ll make up another project for the purpose of sucking. I’d like to participate somehow

sure! anything you do during the month of september can count if you want it to. :pixelcat2: the idea is more to encourage acceptance and de-dramatization of doing a bad job at something than active intentional sucking. (hence mandatory 1 compliment + 1 critique; curbs excessive self-deprecation, gives u an outlet for analyzing ur own work).

it is for fun so whatever you feel satisfies your desire to Try Something In September is a-ok. :+1:

i made a SASS 2025 topic on melonland! i’m happy to give out forum gifts there, and relay any messages you’d like to exist on both versions of the thread.

as for my own idea… hmmmmm… none yet… :umm:

Every month is “suck at something” month for me. Usually “suck at being a husband” month. But the only way to git gud is to keep trying and learning. :)

I’ve had a little project I’ve been wanting to do, which is making a plain text RSS reader. Would mostly be for myself since I have no real idea how to handle users but I’ve felt like it would be a neat exercise. I’m a pretty bad developer though so this sounds like th perfect project for me to suck at haha!

hello everyone – new here at 32bit. i have a tiny html/css webpage to present myself as a scientist. it’s something i’ve kicked since the beginning of 2025, promising myself i’d “have time to put it together”.

i’m admissibly bad at making webpages (esp. those with responsive designs!) so i’ll try my best to suck at it and learn from it

I’m going to take a swing at a unified theme for my site, but with different color schemes for different subdomains (and maybe different sections within subdomains). I’m not great at CSS and I have no sense of design, style, or color. But I have an idea, so I think I think I have a decent shot at executing it poorly.

edit - nope. The thing I’m going to suck at for September is following through on this. Just not feeling like working toward any sort of deadlines.

So for the past month, I haven’t been doing so hot. Not just in terms of creativity, but irl in general. Although I have been trying to pep myself up, it seems like the days have different plans for me lol. I’ve been making a lot of poems to cope as well as make song lyrics because I don’t feel like drawing.

The poems are gonna probably be on Luxe’s site soon, but I’m gonna keep the songs on the drafts bc I haven’t finished any of them yet. I actually plan to try and make them decent.

My plan is to suck at making more shrines for my site, I want to make one for every game I’ve let’s played. I have one page done and a bunch to go. Slowly going to improve the one I’ve started but I want to start at least one more soon…

I also want to make some 2000s style pseudo magazine ads/articles soon too!

Been wanting to do this all September and just noticed step 2 :umm:
I’m working on a new web page with the sole goal of seeing what I can make with tables… no CSS layouts, just like my ancestors did. Not gonna be anything fancy ofc

oh crap i missed that too.

i plan to suck at a couple of things: swimming at least 2x a week to establish a routine and organizing/unpacking my office. i am terrible at routines and i’m a huge procrastinator when it comes to unpacking.

All right, it’s up! Just something quick and dirty. I kept putting off what was supposed to be a small fun thing cuz I thought I was so busy, then I remembered “wait, this is supposed to suck.”

Anyway, the 1 compliment and 1 critique thing:

  • For a first time using tables for making something that isn’t a table, I’m satisfied with how much I tried to stretch the boundaries of it (text-align and vertical-align-ing stuff to vary their position, trying out colspan and rowspan). I usually like to bash my head against a wall trying to make something impressive, but I put my foot for down for this one and said “I’m going to make an ant farm, nothing more”
  • My “no CSS layout” is a sliiiight lie, because I still resorted to some CSS hacks to make the tables centred and what not.
