Old Website Of The Day 🌠🌠🌠

Another old website
Les Entartistes were a group of politically motivated Canadian performance artists who shoved pies in the faces of politicians. At first they offered a $400 reward to anyone who would shove a pie in the face of PM Jean Chrétien, but when nobody took up the offer they began pieing people themselves. Their website is still up and intact in both English and French.

What’s striking to me about this kind of page is how there is artistic expression in the presentation, but there isn’t any editorial viewpoint being expressed that I can see. I think that means it was intended as a resource or a reference.

i wouldn’t trust them with my money though lol (.ro domain registrar)

Indeed, if you want to get a .ro domain I recommend going straight to the source: | RoTLD - Romania Top Level Domain (used to be a pretty retro site, too, then they updated it).

i dont have a need for .ro but good to know

I was messing around looking for inspiration in image searches, when I found this site:

http://qbasicgui.datacomponents.net/

It was last updated in 2015, but has a huuuuuuge list of short reviews of hand-made amateur GUIs. As someone who’s always interested in interface design, this is a treasure trove.

Phrases “the GUI” and “these GUIs” seem to refer to alternative graphical shells for DOS. Maybe this was common shorthand at the time? Wasn’t obvious to me reading it in 2025.

Yeah, it’s a bit confusing as to what the target systems are, since we’re missing some context. After reading through several of them, I think they are shells written in QBASIC for DOS, like you said. The author does mention running them in DOSBox, and has one of their own that they’ve been working on continuously and is still in development–it’s called Costa, and is a lot more functional compared to these.

Site went into “hibernation” in 2019 and they are currently Facebook only (boo!) but its look hasn’t changed since it started in 2003.

The Pocket Computer Museum

Dedicated to 1980s “pocket machines” programmable in BASIC. Stared in 1999, still going! Wayback Machine save from 2000 looks very much like the current set up.

OK, had to edit to add this site, which is link from the uniform site:

WingCollector - a database of military and commercial pilot wings of the world. Site looked the same in 2005! Currently has over 4000 wings in the database, over 1700 in his personal collection.

This is such a cool site! I love all those retro, vintage covers.

Oh, this is a great resource! And a great late 90s/early 2000s layout.

A site dedicated to the Cheese Family, some obscure Sanrio mascot. Its own links still fully work and (according to its updates section) it hasn’t been updated since 2004!

Most of the outside links don’t work, but this one does! Another site dedicated to Tarepanda, another Sanrio mascot.

Oh, that is a cute one! I took the cheese quiz - apparently I’m mozzarella.
