If it helps, Observable is an alternative to Jupyter notebooks that uses javascript instead of python, so you can carry the skills from web dev over more easily.

Don’t get me wrong, learning web technologies was the best investment of my time and energy. Even PHP remains one of the most popular programming languages. But my own apps that I use all the time are written in Python. And while choosing based on popularity is problematic, the convenience has been all too real (if also problematic).

Personal goals are another story, of course. Enjoyment in particular matters a lot to me, too. So I’ve been trying to diversify lately. I was just saying, because work came up.

I can confirm that as someone who learnt Dutch Duolingo-style (finished the whole course twice), no, it does not make you fluent. Not even close! :joy: I can translate B2/C1 spoken and C2 written Dutch into English, no problem, but I can’t really do it the other way.

At least in the US and China, you’re basically forced to learn the language properly or you’ll struggle to get anything done. Here in the Netherlands, if you know English, you’d have to be pretty deep in the country to find anyone you cannot communicate with. It’s also easier to learn via immersion as a kid!

I am on a serious inspirational roll with this new blog. Here’s me getting ahead of my hatred of daylight saving time before it happens for us in Europe this weekend.

EDIT: I also wrote about the bad day I’m NOT having. :joy:

I am working on a piece about how we kinda suck at our approach to getting people to stop using gen AI, and I think I’ll be linking to this as an example of something we should be doing. :joy:

I’ve also noticed those very uncanny pro wrestler thumbnail lists, where images will be repeated, names will be misspelled, and sometimes, the name is just a random line of characters that wraps to the next line.

I’ve already seen SECRET EXTRA GOOD CHAPTER GONNA BE DROPPED NEXT WEEK theories. I thought this was over with Sherlock BBC.

For anyone else who also feels lost sometimes.

A potentially poorly titled (and written) rant about how one shitty customer service experience has lead me to abandon a whole fully-formed opinion I’ve held for practically my entire adult life. Excuse how messy it is. I am REALLY mad this time.

Anybody partaking in the A-Z blogging challenge next month? I haven’t made an announcement post yet but I’ll be doing a little something on my fashion blog

The Weekly Wrap Up is posted! Links this week include some iPod archaeology, a public works chicken and a story about the graphics designer responsible for Britain’s road signs. I went to a protest and my kitty visitor went back to his real home. The Link Lagniappe well has not yet run dry! Plus, as usual, I listened to, read and watched things.
