how do i actually like express myself in writing

I think its that one?

There’s a voice in the back of my head telling me that everything I write will never be anything but shit no matter what I do. It’s the voice of cowardice pretending to be that of reason. (It sounds like my mother.)

I can’t silence it. I don’t even try nowadays. I just tell that voice, “Yeah, thanks for the fuel, asshole. Now fuck off. Daddy’s working.”

I have a similar voice. (Weirdly, mine also sounds like my mother.) I tell it “that’s nice, dear” in the most condescending tone I can manage. And keep writing, just to spite it.

i mean i could try that idk

As someone who’s been trying to blog every week since 2023, let me tell you: nobody actually cares if your blog posts are disorganized and ramble-y. My blog posts are the opposite of professional, but it still surprises me to this day that there are people who read them. I even got emails about some of my blog posts, which is really touching.

Also, the blogs that I enjoy reading the most belong to people who just talk about their interests and experiences. To me, their writing isn’t the product of professional experience, but the expression of how they think and feel.

Lastly, blogging isn’t the only way to express yourself! If you’re not comfortable with your writing, then perhaps you can dabble in other media like art, audio journals, videos, etc.

The thing about writing is that you just let the words flow freely. It’s one of the best ways to express yourself; it’s you, it’s unique, it’s your passion.

As long as you allow your emotions and thoughts to roam freely through your words, your writing will speak for itself. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to self-expression.

Once you’re done writing, that’s when you can go back and edit, fix what you feel needs fixing, clean up any grammar. But my main process is always to roam freely first, and let the words pour out. It’s like music to me, my rhythm, my way of making sense of everything.

You got this! :D Just let your words flow like it’s water in a river.

So, this is not a judgemental question, this is me trying to figure out your goals and motivation, but
why do you want to blog?

There is no wrong answer for this question, I just want to give advice based on what you want to do.

candycanearter07, do you journal?

For a very very long time I wanted to blog but didn’t know how to write and I didn’t know what to write about. At one point I found my way into journalling. (And I do not mean the instagrammable kind! I mean messy handwriting for my eyes only.) I actually took some online courses. Both for art journalling, and for written journalling.
When I feel the urge to get words out of my head I just sit down and let them out. That’s the secret to journalling actually: just let the words out. Don’t judge anything at this point. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, anything. Just let the words out. Write write write. Or, as someone above said, if it feels better for you, make an audio recording. No one is going to read or hear your words at this stage. You just record words and thoughts, so that you have something to work with later.
Now you can look at the structure, at grammar, spelling and the rest. And even then, you do not have show anyone anything. You can just write and practice writing that way. Take your time. Go away from a text for a while and come back with a fresh mind.

Before I started my blog a few years ago I journalled for years. And then I started to turn some of my ramblings into readable texts for a while. It took a while for me to finally setting up my blog. It came with me finding my way back into making websites, and it’s what my first blog posts are about.

What it all comes down to is what people have said here already: The only way to get better at writing is to write. Just do it.

And if you don’t know what to write about, I suggest you search for journalling prompts, or blog challenges. They are fun, you just answer some questions about a topic. However short or long or detailed as you like.

Have you tried journalling privately? That way you would not have to worry about what other people think while getting comfortable with writing - and with expressing yourself in writing.

If you want to journal to express yourself then that needs to be the priority. And if that’s the priority, then professionalism is not the goal. The goal is to put your thoughts to words, to do it regularly, and do it in such a way that you enjoy doing it. It should never feel like a job or homework.

theresmiling mentioned journaling privately, and I agree. Do it for yourself, do it however you like, make a habit of it, use pen and paper if that makes you feel better. maybe doing it privately first for a bit will take off the pressure to feel like you have to present a certain way. And if there ever comes a point where you’re like ‘I like what I wrote about, I think I’d like to put it on my website’ you can do just that. You can keep it as is or re-write it a little. But the ultimate goal should be to just write it.

As mentioned before, many of us have been journaling either in private or public for a long time, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you feel like you’re more scattered than others. Time and frequency will smooth things out and help you find your voice.
