The holidays varies from location to location but some people celebrate things hard, such as myself with Halloween. That being said, do you all ever make themes/changes to your sites for the holidays?
I’ve been cranking out nonestop getting the Halloween theme done and finally got it done, and launching it tomorrow! So I was curious who all does the same thing :) If so, what do you end up doing? Do you go all out or just make a small little theme change for each holiday?
Fair enough! You could always make them and reuse them yearly. So the only hassle is making them the first run. I’m planning on doing a unique one every time, but that’s 100% not for everyone XD
I guess it really depends on your own site yuna2k :) For some it could be as simple as changing the css, for others it’s everything to include base code or adding js’ and what not! It would really depend on what you personally were feeling. I know some places go as little as adding snow for the winter holidays, or a spider/spider web in the corner for halloween, or a site I’m on just changed their CSS from white to gray & dark red (Colors clash but I believe in you doing you XD)
Every now and then I think about doing something like that but I’m not creative enough to create styling that I would feel satisfied with.
The only exception is that in March to celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility, I add a trans flag banner to my site for a couple of days.
I’d love to do some Christmas and midsummer specials but maybe one day.
yes! i have a halloween variant and a wintertime variant of my homepage i swap to, and i add an overlay on trans day of visibility. i don’t care that much about holidays besides halloween but i think it’s really fun when websites are affected by time/season!
I haven’t done ever in the history of the site, my homepage layout and design changes take me weeks to months at a time at the best of times so this would keep me busy year round
I do like the snow fall effect that gets used around Christmas time, but as I’m down in the southern hemisphere and we don’t get snow here during Christmas I’m considering changing out the snow for Pōhutukawa flowers. The Pōhutukawa is nicknamed New Zealand’s Christmas tree as they bloom around December - They’re really incredible to see in full force over the summer.
I’ve only had the current version of my site for about a year. Before that, I didn’t pay enough attention to it to do something like that. I think holiday themes are cute and I love when other sites do them, but my website is intentionally plain to keep the focus on the art and writing it’s showcasing rather than on what surrounds it. So, a holiday theme probably wouldn’t fit. Plus, I had enough trouble making a light mode for its current theme. I don’t want to struggle through more. XD
I’ve always wanted to do holiday/seasonal themes for my website, but it hasn’t manifested yet (largely because by the time I think to start on it, we’re already in the throes of the season!). Ideally if I do ever make some designs, I’d love to set things up so that it automatically changes at certain times of year.
I’ve done Christmas themes a couple of times, a Fall theme once and I did an entire Halloween theme one year. Now I just dust off the Halloween page and stick a banner on the homepage.
I wish I could decorate for occasions but because of the goblin way I code, it’s not easy. I thought of maybe creating a splash page and that could change seasonally but that would be a lot of work.
Some of my sites have “message of the day” sections where I sometimes post seasonal greetings, especially when there haven’t been other updates for a while; it’s a good way to let people know I’m still around. Otherwise, no. It’s too much fuss and I’d just forget to take down the decorations for months.
That’s what I did! I can make themes in advance and then set up the date/time to go live, and then the date/time to bring it back to the OG theme. that way I can make it months in advance, and set it up to automagically go live when I inevitably forget about it XD (The theme that is).
@DivergentRays you could always just add falling snow, or bats that ‘chase your mouse’ or something as well if you wanted an easy way to give it some umph without going all out and there’s pre-made scripts you can just plug and play as well a ton of people use to use once upon a time.
@pnppl Halloween best holiday and no one can change my mind! @juette I’ve done this more times than I’d like to admin :') @nosycat that’s still something imo! It’s the little things that can make everything pop imo <3
I ended up doing one, for those who do I’d love to see yours as well <333
