Thankfully, my other dog doesn’t mind them. She’ll sometimes jump in shock when they happen, but it never stops her enjoyment of a walk or anything. My boy, on the other hand, just can’t handle it at all. It really sucks because it either means having to walk at crazy times or leaving him at home to walk just her. That’s not fair to him.

We’ve tried everything. The only thing that really works is medication which we give him the week around New Years Eve, but the vets don’t recommend it long-term. :sob:

Officially, it’s just a general tax that can go towards anything, but it was originally to pay municipal workers to pick up the poop that irresponsible dog owners didn’t pick up.

Our municipality provides play pens and free poop bags, so there’s actually some value there, but if I can’t take my dogs out, they’re not using the services or pooping where a worker has to clean it up. And they’re sure not using it to pay enforcement officers to stop the illegal fireworks from happening, so I don’t think it’s worth paying anymore.

Editing to add that I pick up their poop with my own poop bags because I just realised how that paragraph sounded. Hahaha.

im mixed on fireworks i absolutely hate the exploding kind, the ones people throw during holidays (thankfully here only dec and jan are firework months)

but i do love the ones that launch into the sky at night. they’re pretty and i like those…

i hope ur doggo is okay tho :(

I used to love them, but now I can’t even enjoy the pretty ones. Even the party scene in Lord of the Rings makes me angry. :upside_down_face:

Ugh I wouldn’t want to be paying if they can’t enforce noise ordinances either!

Links!

I want to do more links roundups (I only have the one at the beginning).

I’ll try a tagging system in my notes app for #links for a week and check in with what collected under the tag through through the festivities this week.

I had heard of the cursed wood, but forgot about it. I’m glad the story is getting its way around.

Native broadband is something I’ve been following, as [was it On The Media?] ran that story about people buying up fm radio for internet and cell towers and that eating into Indigeous bandwitch treaties.

Power and Light Press, a food truck retrofitted for letterprint, came through our town and showed the kids how to make little prints. (Chunky metal pieces!)

I haven’t read much of 404 media’s stuff, but I loved their coverage of Lavender and have wanted to dove in more.

Thanks for linking! Good hubs!

I made a fun little rant! I don’t do enough of these. Have some anger!

It fizzles out pretty quick. I’m usually a quiet fire, so springing to life like this was fun for me.

/!\ Heads! /!\ I call people out on taking shot, without watching where they’re aiming. The post pooh-poos kicking people who self-medicate their loneliness with generative text, equates the behavior to incarcerating drug users.

Why do people play with fireworks for 4 months of the year over there???

Also side question, are you referring to actual fireworks or… I dunno how they’re called in english, Napatzim? Those small thumb-sized packets that you throw at the floor and make a loud POP sound?

The Dutch are WEIRD about fireworks. They will literally be so frugal that they use a single teabag for 2+ cups of tea for most of the year only to spend thousands on fireworks for New Years Eve. And because that much is being spent, some people hoard them and start letting them off in October instead of waiting for the seven hours they’ve legally been given to do it.

And yep, actual fireworks! The problematic ones are illegal ones bought in from neighbouring countries, mostly. Essentially designed to only be noisy rather than pretty. They sound like actual bombs being dropped. Not just cute little snaps and pops.

They also have another ā€œtraditionā€ here called carbidschieten (carbide shooting), where they light calcium carbide in a milk can and use it to shoot footballs into the air. The point seems to be to make the loudest boom.

I will absolutely never understand it. Especially as the Netherlands was heavily bombed during WWII. :woman_shrugging:t2:

(Edit: I don’t think anyone can really understand how bad it is without living here or visiting during the winter months. I feel like everyone thinks I’m exaggerating, but it really is that bad!)

This video is actually pretty tame to the reality. :upside_down_face:

Power and Light is so cool! It’s such a weird niche and I’m excited you’ve heard of them! I do like 404 Media’s coverage of most things - they’re all former Vice/Motherboard journalists who went out on their own.

This sounds like an absolute nightmare, I’m so sorry :frowning: I hate fireworks too, especially for how they affect animals.

I remember Mushi-shi, though I only watched the first series of the anime, not the second.

It was a good day on the web (for me at least)

thread closes in an hour, can i he the last to post?

Re: optimisticlucio - The game looks both really cool and intimidating, I’m tempted to give it a go if it goes on sale.

Re: small_cypress, your post collecting positive world stuff is making me think I should do it too. Really loving this idea!
