Some additions:
- If you go rental VPS route, you should more than make-do with a $5 per month one (and possibly even cheaper)
- VPS Security (before Tor / .onion / dark web setup):
- #1: Security Best Practices for Vultr Instances (other services have similar tutorials)
- #2A: How to Secure Your New VPS: A Step-by-Step Guide - by Kyri
-
If you’re using hugo ssg, consider utilizing the ability to combine multiple configuration files (in my case: tor config partially / selectively overrides clear web config)
-

- Might wanna setup logging / log rotation too.
-
Get a “vanity” dark web url: mkp224o - vanity address generator for ed25519 onion services
- Standard currently seems to be a 6-character prefix- I went with ‘flthis’ for mine.
Honestly, like with most self-hosting, this is more sysadmin stuff than web-weaving but it wasn’t impossible and it’s pretty chill once setup, and I think it’s super cool, and healthy and empowering, etc.
